I have a 72 burb 4x4, and the vin is KE161Z634059...tried to decode this and it does not jive.

note, most serial numbers are 1xxxxx, and the first vehicle off that line would be 100001. When an assembly plant had 2 lines with the same model rolling off, then the first one is supposed to be 800001, however, I doubt they rolled 500,000+ trucks off of one line... I suspect they numbered the second line at that plant starting withh 500001, or possibly 600001.

What makes you think your burb is a 72, does it have the plastic door panels?

on the title it says 1972...I haven't looked at the burb in about 6 months but was about to start working on it this week. When I move it to the house, I will look at the panels..maybe the it was titled wrong?? if so, when I title it in my name here in TX, I wondered if they can fix it?? It is a New Mexico title rite now. thank you for your help....you know thinking about it, I don't think it has '72 door panels. I will let you know when I get the burb to the house.

Some states title a truck by the year it's sold rather than its model year. So sometimes they're a year off. '71 model year Chevy trucks have a rearview mirror screwed to the top center of the windshield frame. '72s have the mirror glued to the center windshield. Only way to tell the '71/'72s apart from the outside.

Just to clarify here:

At Flint Assembly, all Chevy's started at 100001 and all GMCs started with 500001.

This was true for both Line 1 (pickups) and Line 2 (Blazer and Suburban).

Keith, where did you get that info? GMC vins were nothing like chevy vins till 71 or so, they didn't even have 6 digits for the serial number.

I should have mentioned that was an example, relative to the multiple assembly lines in the same plant, probably starting in '73 (definitely by '79).

My mind just automatically goes to '73-87...

I didn't mean to imply that was the case for 72 and earlier. Sorry if that caused some confusion.
