power wire to coil
Hi, on my 65, where the harness for the engine comes out ofthe firewall, there is a plug. on the engine side of that plug the wire that goes to the (+) coil, is a solid wire with insulation. I'm told thejobof this wire is to bring the power to the coil down to 9volts. Other then the wire, is there another way to do that?
reason im asking, is i left my truck running outside to warm up, and it stalled. When i got back out to it a couple minutes later, there was a burning smell, opened the hood and the wire was red hot. any suggestions? |

Re: power wire to coil
Some trucks I've seen have used a ceramic resistor like on the chryslers. personally I'd look for another harness out of a scrapper.

Re: power wire to coil
A balast resistor is what most people end up using. You can get a ceramic one from just about any auto supply. You can then replace your damaged wire with a smaller gauge wire run it to the ressistor and from the resistor to the hot side of your coil. Around here thats one of the first things done to older cars when you want to keep the stock ignition. Seriously cuts down on the risk of your toy ending up a roadside bonfire.

Re: power wire to coil
I agree......just replace that fuseable link with a regular wire, add a ballast resistor (12V to 7V) and connect the other end of the resistor to your coil.
