Cutting springs, I know its gehtto
I know cutting springs is the cheap red neck way to do it and i will probably get alot of replies telling how bad it is, but oh well. About how much spring should i cut off for 2-3 inches in the front? Its 66 if that makes a difference

Re: Cutting springs, I know its gehtto
Nothing wrong with cutting springs if it's done with out excesssive heat. Heating coils till the drop is very Hillbilly.
On most applications, you don't want to cut more than one coil.

Re: Cutting springs, I know its gehtto
i like cut springs lol
for 88-98 chevys i use cut 3/4 ton coils and for 73-87 i use do the same thing. it rides really well, not bouncy. but a good monroe shock is key to a good ride. and since rear of your truck is coil spring us jeep tj coils, they drop it about 4in Last edited by fiddy9apache; 09-10-2009 at 04:09 PM. |

Re: Cutting springs, I know its gehtto
I cut 1 1/2 coils out of my '71.
Dropped about 3 1/2" I used a grinder. No problems so far. Just be very careful removing the springs.

Re: Cutting springs, I know its gehtto
I've done @ least 7 63-87 trucks this way. Cut 1-coil for 2-3" of front drop depending on the spring/truck combo. Cutting more will put you on the bumpstops much faster & requires cutting them down. The coils can also dislodge in the spring pocket under the crossmember once 2 rounds are removed (in full extension situations).

Re: Cutting springs, I know its gehtto
I cut 1 coil off to start then another 1/4 coil for about 3" . Had to remove the bump stops . With it that low the shocks bottomed out.
I used a 41/2" grinder with a cut off wheel , fast and little heat .

Re: Cutting springs, I know its gehtto
To keep heat down when cutting the spring, stick it in a bucket of water filled up almost to where you're cutting it. Only use hand or air tools when using water. Electricity & water don't mix!

Re: Cutting springs, I know its gehtto
There's no need for the bucket of water unless you're using a torch. Cut off wheels localize the heat & make quick work of the cut.

Re: Cutting springs, I know its gehtto
I just did mine. I cut one wrap and got about 1.5" however, I have a 307, if you have a BB there is more wieght on the front. With old springs and varying levels of abuse people seem to get anywhere from 1.5-3 inches from one coil. I used a metal cutting blade in a circular saw and it worked great.
