GM Steering Column....wiring question
hey guys,
Does anyone have a good wiring diagram for a gm steering column. I have a 1991 s10 column. I have everything wired using a EZ wiring kit. I have a set of 3 wires (white, purple and gray) that are all connected to a harness clip. I have traced everyhting out but I have no idea what they are for. Im thinking cruise control. I also have one wire that is black with a large butt connector. Does anyone know if this a ground wire or if the column even has a ground wire. I tried to post a pic but for some reason it wouldn't load up. The link below does work though. thanks for any help!!!! http://s581.photobucket.com/albums/s...t=IMG_1877.jpg ......

Re: GM Steering Column....wiring question
I have the motor all wired up but I can only start it with a bump starter bypassing to ignition switch. Thats why I think the black with the connector is a ground. Everything else is working. I also thought that the connector piece was for the wipers but I dont think thats what they are for. I have a seperate single wire in my harness for that. Thats why I thought maybe cruise control. I googled "s10 wiring schematic" and couldnt really find what I was looking for.

Re: GM Steering Column....wiring question
I am traveling but it might also be the dimmer switch wires. Its an L connector that will fit the floor dimmer or the one mounted on some columns on the left side. If you have cruise in the left stalk those wires are pretty small (20 ga) that exit towards the bottom of the column on the left. I have both on my eldo column. If you haven't figured it out by Tuesday night I can post a diagram of the column wiring. The ez harness comes with the dimmer wiring but nothing for the cruise.

Re: GM Steering Column....wiring question
the black wire is just the cover on the cruise harness there are acutually 4 very small wires inside and all 4 pins are on the one connecter

Re: GM Steering Column....wiring question
Go to Autozone.com and register, follow the tabs and you'll then be able to go to schematics for a '91 s10 and figure out what it is. They have good schematics easy to follow.

Re: GM Steering Column....wiring question
So post up what you've found for those of us using that exact same steering column and wiring it up next weekend....

Re: GM Steering Column....wiring question
hey blue jeep,
i think the best thing I found that helped me the most was the painless wiring diagram. It was nice to compare it to the EZ wiring. EZ's directions were pretty simple. I have only done the engine side of the wiring kit. I dont have my gauges in, bed on or headlights in yet. The motor wiring was very easy and explained well in the directions. let me know if you need anything specific. I will be more than willing to help if I can. brian

Re: GM Steering Column....wiring question
I really only need to know which wire does what on the steering column, just like the one in the picture. The painless diagram only shows the ignition and dimmer, not the wipers.

Re: GM Steering Column....wiring question
Here are the connectors on the 82 eldo column I used. Some are common to other GM columns others are not. I included the wire colors and where applicable the ezwire colors, a few are different from the factory harness. Hope it helps someone.

Re: GM Steering Column....wiring question
Purple and Grey sound like the wires to a neutral safety switch. That would explain the starting issues. is the switch still on the column?

Re: GM Steering Column....wiring question
Griffen,
dumb question???? i know what the neutral safety switch does but I dont know what the column connector looks like. I havent touched my truck in about 2 weeks......long story. Do you have pix of what the switch looks like and how do I by pass it.

Re: GM Steering Column....wiring question
Not dumb by any means. Taking apart stuff and then months later putting it back together makes things hard. The NSS is the white c shaped block at the bottom topside of your column (look at picture 138 of your photobucket). Now how you bypass it I'm not sure of, I'm only 50% helpful.

Re: GM Steering Column....wiring question
I'm afraid i've only dealt with the NSS on the older columns. Basically a "half moon" shaped item at the base of the column that keeps the car/truck from starting unless it's in "P" or "N". the older ones only have two wires. basically the switch just interrupts the current to the ignition system unless you're in park or neutral. Not sure about the 3rd wire. Get a test light, turn the ignition off and see if any of the wires has any current. turn the ignition on and at least one of them will have 12 volts. that should be the "hot wire" from your ignition switch. one (or both) of the others will be the continuation of the igtnition circuit down to engage the starter. I'm going to GUESS (only a guess) that perhaps the new switches have one wire to engage it when it's in park and one to engage it when it's in neutral. IF (big IF) that's true then you could just jumpt he hot wire to the other two wires and bypass the switch BUT i really don't know how those switches are set up internally. If you have the switch and the connection, why not just use the switch?????????

Re: GM Steering Column....wiring question
Griffin's thoughts are what I was thinking, to "trick" the switch. It seems like I've read something somewhere on this but, I'm not sure. Have you tried the sites V8s10 or S10v8, they have alot of info about V8 swaps. Tonight I will see what color wires go out of the switch and where they go on the S10 harness.

Re: GM Steering Column....wiring question
I speculate that the neutral safety switch (half moon white at the base of the column as mentioned) controls the neutral safety and the reverse lights.
I yanked mine as my 4L60E has the NSS on the side of the tranny.

Re: GM Steering Column....wiring question
I looked last night and there is a dark blue and light green wire plugged into the switch. The dark blue goes to the stop/b-u fuse and the light green goes to the actual back up lights. Hopes this helps.

Re: GM Steering Column....wiring question
1952ssr,
thanks for the info on the wires. i spoke with my chevy dealership, they said that there are only 2 wires in the NSS connector. My NSS has 5 different connection points. Im not sure what all 4 are for. Can you post a pic of your NSS so i can figure out what 2 connection points to use. I hope Im making some sense!! thanks brian

Re: GM Steering Column....wiring question
1952ssr, I hope Im making some sense!!
Totally making sense, my s10 was a '85 so it had no ECM and I'm sure that's why it only has two wires. I was looking at the painless manual for hooking up my LT1 and it shows your style NSS. Now it's not apples to apples but go to the painless site and click manuals, search for the LT1/LT4 (p/n 60502 & 60505) link and view manual, page 6 tells how to hook up if you are NOT using a VSS or PN switch and page 7 shows the switch and different ways of hook up. Read it carefully cause it's confusing. Your 700r4 is'nt electronic like the 4L60E but my s10 had a 700r4 so I think hooking it up with the two wires might work. Also did you look at a switch at the dealership, I'll take a picture but it'll be Monday before I load the picture for you. |

Re: GM Steering Column....wiring question
You can also use a volt meter to test the circuit thru the switch. You will have a ignition start hot probably from the switch and a paired output that is not in park and neutral but dead in R or and gear. The other pair will have a hot for the back up lights and a paired output that is hot when in reverse. If you aren't powered up you can just check for continuity with the ohm meter function thrugh the various combinations (4x4 = 16 possible combinations).
