Degreasing a power steering pump.
Ok, I have a couple power steering pumps that are just nasty and covered in oil and fluids. i would like to degrease them and was wondering if i could just put them in my parts washer with some simple green or degreaser, and clean them. Would it hurt is some got inside them, as long as I let them dry out after? Thanks.

Re: Degreasing a power steering pump.
I don't think that's a good idea. The solvent would damage the rubber seals & other parts inside the pump.
You should be able to take the reservoir off & tank that along with the bolts. |

That may work. I've not disassembled one yet, so I will have to give that a shot this weekend. All I know is that one make a huge mess on my bench.

Re: Degreasing a power steering pump.
This past winter I did my wifes 68 Chevelle steer pump. I used spray can engine degreaser, trying to keep as much outta the inside as possible. I then used a garden sprayer w/diesel and hosed out the inside while it was upside down to remove any of the crap that may have gotten inside. A little brake cleaner, prime and paint. While its not perfect, its much better than it was before. We've had no problems w/seals or leaks.

why did you use diesel? Could I use brake cleaner inside instead?

If you like your seals, don't use brake cleaner. He used diesel because it cleans but is a oil so its ok for seals.

Rest of story...I've had a garden sprayer w/diesel or kero for years. Its a good "solvent" for grease/grime removal, and its cheaper than can cleaners. On the pow-steer-pump, I scraped off the heavy stuff, used diesel to get the grime, then used the engine degreaser to get the residue left by the diesel. Flushed the inside of the hoses while I was there. HTH..good luck....don t. ..... |
