Narrow Axle vs Stock
I have seen several threads recently asking about narrowing rear axles, or stock rear axles that are narrower than the original ones that came with our trucks. I plan on linking some of those threads here as well as compiling information from you guys. This will give us a reference thread for future use.
Are there any known good conversions that will fit under our trucks? Camaro, Impala, or ??? 60-66 width-? 67-70 width-? 71-72 width-? 73-87 width-? 88-98 width-? Narrower rearend- LINK Chevy 10 Bolt Diff w/22x11 rears- LINK anybody running 20x15 rear wheels..LINK Cutting rear end- LINK Pro stock wheels or not- LINK

Re: Narrow Axle
Ken,... just to clarify,... I assume your want drum to drum measurements?
(or wheel mounting point to wheel mounting point) I use backing plate to backing plate, because it's easier to check with a vehicle setting on the ground with wheels on it. (maybe not as accurate)

Re: Narrow Axle
The late 70 - 72 housing is the same width as a 73-87 housing.

Are they trying stretch the tape from side to side & including the mild bend in their dimension? One guy might while another doesn't. Or, are they measuring as far a possible in a straight line, making a reference 'tick' mark, & adding it all up? What brakes does the possible swap candidate rear have? They make a difference when determining how much 'narrower' you need the overall length to be for exact placement of the wheel/tire combo within the body.

Re: Narrow Axle
any chance you could add the lug measurements and quanity of lugs
I have been pondering this myself ??? I have a 70 which really throws me for a loop....I want the narrow one for obvious reasons... |

Re: Narrow Axle
You can measure from the axle flange (adjacent to the backing plate) to the center-line of the truck arm u-bolt to figure out which one you have (wider or shorter version).
