Removed the engine and trans today on the 1987 GMC V2500

My son and I removed the 350 engine and Turbo 350 trans today from the 1987 GMC. It was kind of tight as I am limited on shop space right now so I had to put dollies under the engine hoist so I could move the lift sideways, it worked good. As I had removed the front differential and springs I was able to removed the trans and transfer case out the front in one piece strapped to my jack . Note: I had supported the belhousing with the engine lift until I removed the cross member then lowered both the jack and lift until the trans rested on the jack. This actually worked pretty well.
The engine will go in the 1986 Chevy 4x4 I bought last week. I am not sure if I want to go with the turbo 350 or the 700R4 that is in the 1986. Both have been rebuilt but the 700R4 was more recent. The 86 is a 1/2 ton but will be 3/4 ton when I am done.
Now I have to remove the bad engine and good 700R4 from the 1986. As it is about 90+ degrees here in Virginia it is not too fun working in this heat.

I have a fan but it is 100% humidity and 95 degrees out The sweat was dripping off me so bad I had to quite 3 times and take a shower. It is like working in a rain forest. I have A/C in the shop but as my truck is sticking in the door that was useless. Once I get it out I am closing the doors and turning the A/C on.

Too many projects in process. I have a 1970 Buick GS in front of the truck which is also over my work pit. If you notice the metal doors under the lift that is one set that covers part of the pit. I custom designed and built the pit. I have had the GS since 1979 and it has won almost every show but is in need of freshening up. I have the interior and trunk done and am working on the frame and engine (455 with duel quads). I also have a ford 901 tractor in front of the car which I am restoring. The engine and frame is done and working towards the back.

Which you go with depends on how you will use the truck.

If you push it hard the T350 will last longer and is far less expensive to repair.

If you do just regular truck work and mostly running around the 700R4 will save you gas and make the truck a little more responsive as it has a lower first gear ratio than the T350.

I am putting the EFI engine in the 1986. I stripped the computer and EFI wiring out of the 87 today. I now need a good wiring diagram for the wires that were to the fuse block. There are about 5 and the rest are to and from the computer and relays.
Now that I have the stuff out of the engine bay of the 87 I am in the process of installing an 8 ton wagon running gear under the front end of the truck. I figure I can still use it behind my tractor for hauling wood. I plan to build a box in the engine compartment for my saws chains, etc. I may just leave the hydraulic dump unit on this truck as I was going to install in on the 86 but I can still use it on the 87 I just need to keep the battery in it.
I still need to decide if I will convert the 86 to 3/4 ton or just leave it 1/2 ton.

I would be inclined to pull the under dash harness and gauge cluster out of the 87 as there are a few things connected to the ECM that the 86 does not have.

This will make your life much easier as it will all just bolt in with no modifications needed.

Does the 87 have dual fuel tanks? What about the 86? The dual tank EFI fuel line & switching valve system is a little awkward to remove but it can be done with the bed off.

You should pull the fuel tanks out of the 87 too as they have pans in the bottom to keep the fuel pump pickup submerged that the 86 tanks do not have.
