Re: assembly line hand written markings

Yes - they were a large crayon, like they use in the tire stores.

Some restoration shops/catalogs sell them as well.

Any color could be used (whatever was handy - white, yellow, red), and it could vary based on plant, shift and/or operator, so I would recommend you simply document how it looks now and try to duplicate that.

My truck was number "87":

Re: assembly line hand written markings

You are welcome.

In my case it was the "build sequence number", so it was just the number of the vehicle as it came down the line.

It is the last two digits of the "manifest sequence number" and they increment up in order. The truck after mine would be 88, then 89, etc. Once they got to 1000 they would usually start over at 1, 2, 3 etc.

Not sure what just a "2" might mean; could be the same thing, or could be a flag for a specific option code, or second shift, or someone's lunch menu choice....

(I'm serious).

If you find a "2" in some other locations, like under the hood, on the diff, on a tire or wheel, then that would lend some credibility to it being your build sequence number.
