Re: New to BBC
A good set of heads will be a critical part of the equation. I would go 454 as they are allot easier to come by. If you really want an awesome motor put a 4.25 inch stroke crank in a 454 block and you will be amazed.

Re: New to BBC
Adding a 1/4 inch of stroke adds several cubic inches. A 30 over is a 489 a 60 over is a 496 and so on.
I have had good luck with Brodix but there are several good heads out there. If you want to race an aluminum head would help allot with weight transfer.

Re: New to BBC
we need to know your budget then go from there. it adds up fast. imo buy one from vortecproengines.com if you only want to spend $5-6000. he is the best out there for the price. check out his reviews on chevelles.com.

Hyd roller would be the best but not cheap.

Re: New to BBC
Thanks for checking it out. Call up mark jones and he will plan it out with you. If I found him before building my engine I would have his 650hp 496.

Re: New to BBC
I had a 496 that made 830hp and 595 rw hp, in my 68 camaro. I could not get ANY 5 or 6 speed trans to hold up behind it. Finally went to a built manual valve body 350 turbo and it did fine.
At your estimated 500 rwhp, You would probably be fine on street tires with the 6-speed, I think if you put slicks on it and took it to the track you may have problems. Good luck sounds fun.

Re: New to BBC
yea i think for your app u need a tick performance cryo treated trans. Ive talked to D&D transmissions and they have a kit that will allow the trans to withstand 700ft-lbs. so if i grenade that then ill get a tick trans

Re: New to BBC
30 over 4 bolt forgeds crank/rods(7/16th arp bolts) if not h beam or i beam.
strocker crank (489) good forged pistons (srp) and dart pro 1 heads and a nice hdy roller cam.. ( went solid roller) single plane intake. and a 850 d/p 500rwhp is alot, what you doing to the truck to make it hook.. |

Re: New to BBC
For roughly 550 at the crank, gunna need heads as stated above. Get ya some AFR's....especially if you are going to stroke it. Challenge is going to be either hitting the HP target or the budget. Might be hard to do both.

Re: New to BBC
My 496 made more horsepower with brodix 2xtra cnc'd, over the pro 1's. My last bbc I built had cfe bmf cnc'd 385's, 582 c.i made 1115 hp single carb, no power adder. I really think the cfe heads are hard to beat for bbc horsepower.

Re: New to BBC
Carl Foltz....BMF is their "budget" line of heads and they will run you over $3,000 for the pair. Overkill for what you are trying to build and attain.

Re: New to BBC
$1100 bare ?? I paid $1800 for the brodix 2xtra cnc,d complete, ready to bolt on, Not having to spend $$ for port work is worth quite a bit.
