66 rear mount gas tank
It's time to order a gas tank, the two tanks that I'm looking at are 49-52 chevy passenger car which Lakeroadster showed how to install it and did a great job of it (THANK YOU). The other is a 60ish Ford Falcon, has any one installed this tank and could share some info and pictures. I'm looking at the pros and cons between the two tanks. I plain on the filler neck in the bed.
Thanks |

Re: 66 rear mount gas tank
Check out my project JO JO in the build section you can see a tank from Performance online. Extremely nice kit. early frames are wider than your , I know many use the 70's blazer tank that you can get for under 80 bucks. Good luck

Re: 66 rear mount gas tank
That's what I like about this site you ask a question and you get great feedback thank you. Mr Roadster using the tank that you did who hard do you think it would be to move the fill tube to the center of the bed.
Thanks for your help |

Re: 66 rear mount gas tank
I bought my tank from Dave Boyd. See the thread from the 67-72 forum. I bought the 67-72 version for my 1966 C-20, and it fit great after I moved one of my rear crossmembers back about an inch and removed the spare tire crossmember. If you don't want to make any modifications, he will make you a tank exactly to your specs. I felt that his pricing was great too.

Re: 66 rear mount gas tank
John I have one more question. Can you get your hand up in the frame to get to the bed mount bolt I see in your picture that your's is standing up like you welded a nut on the bottom.
Thanks Keith |

Re: 66 rear mount gas tank
i just measured the tank we took out of son n law's '69 mustang. it measures 24.5" x 32.75" & is 8" tall. it would fit perfect between the rails & has a rear center fill wit 2.25" in dia. looks like a perfect bed fill tank. you would need a mustang sender & have it re-calibrated for our fuel gauge. i will post piks tonight. we bought the new one at "mustangs r us" or something like that for $99.

Re: 66 rear mount gas tank
There is a thread in here on Mustang and Falcon tanks use, the issue was they were only 16 gallons, they bolt down right onto the frame rails, now I`m hearing they have increased the volume as an option also...

Re: 66 rear mount gas tank
There was a guy that installed a 69/70 cougar tank in the rear of a `59 chevy pu, frames are the same width in the rear, he had to trim 1.5 inches off each side lower rail to fit....

Re: 66 rear mount gas tank
John-
For the Chev tank, did you have to modify the braces on the bed, or raise the floor at all? My bed is off the truck, and in the back yard. I'm starting to forget what it looks like. I like the 49-54 Chev idea, and I believe Tanks is only about an hour away from me. And while I'm at it, has anyone here seen an F body tank in one of these? I have heard of it, just never seen pics. I wouldn't mind using a stock tank and stock GM fuel pump.

John
How much above the frame did you mount the tank. That F body tank does not work for me. It looks like I'm going to use the same tank that you did just wanted to look at the ford falcon tank first. Thanks for your help Keith |

Re: 66 rear mount gas tank
Here`s a shot of the couger / mustang tank install, and yes he trimed 1.5 inches off each side of the lower frame rail.

Re: 66 rear mount gas tank
Thanks for the info guys! I know this question has been beat to death, but there are so many options for indecisive people like me!
I was going to take the easy blazer tank route, but plans of changed. I will need to run an electric pump, and prefer to use an intake setup.
