Got my "new" used tranny... R&I?
Hey All, I have never done a large project like this before... its a 700r4 in a 86 chevy, what should i look for? For example just small tips that one may look over? Like, fluid in the torque converter? do i fill it up then install it on the tranny?
I have no real guidance, i am just trying to figure it out.. project undergoes next weekend |

also, what if any gaskets should i replace? its a used tranny, i mean obviously the filter, nut what else? (that is easy and requires no special tools) i just want to get the truck drivable.. a new motor and rebuilt tranny will come next year.. but i just bough the truck and it wont go over 30 since it only has first gear...
but what or if any other gaskets while its out that require no tools or severe taking apart? |

Are you positive the tranny is bad. I don't have any experience with a 700r4 but I've had turbo 350 and 400s that wouldn't shift out of first because of vacuum issues or the governor. I think the Throttle valve controls shifts on the 700r4? I'm not positive on that like I said I've never owned one, But you might consider looking into that first.

Do the rear seal also. Other leaks will come from the dipstick tube (upgrade to the "Boot" type seal, and the o-ring around the TV cable to trans case.

if the torque converter is empty then youll need to fill it. from empty it holds like 4 qrts i think, fill it up then install it... when you put it on spin the conv. till it slides on then keep turning it slowly till it slides back again if it dosent move twice it isnt seated right and when you try to bolt it back up it wont go on (found out the hard way) and be sure to adjust your tv cable correctly before drving it after replacement.
