1951 chevy 3800 1 ton pick up. HWY rolling.
Thanks to all of you , the site , and the tech info.-I now have hwy gears for my 1951 3800 1 ton pick -up . Now I know some of you don't think of 4.11 as a hwy gear - but compared to the 5.14 that was there it is wonderful I can actually run with traffic and not get run over , or get the you are #1 sign . I found one near my house - less than 4 miles- and the guy swapped even.THe little 235 still has plenty of pull and I still have granny gear . again thanks for the info

[I am curious about what you used for the swap. I don't know how to track down the advice you got. Did you just change the pumpkin/ or the whole rear end. What years would work in either case?B][/B]

I found a 71 chevy 3/4 ton long bed truck that had the HO 52-72 style rear end. I didnt even jack it up or remove the wheels. Losened 8 bolts on the axle - slide them out. Unbolted the chunk- ( watch for grease) and then did the same to mine.I cleaned all the surfaces, used high temp silicon, and then I replaced my original 5.14 chunk( center section) with the 4.10 chunk-slide my axles back in and tightened everything down. I replaced the grease and took it for a spin. ( WOW nobody was giving me the you are #1 sign for being so slow anymore) I then double checked the axles , and the chunk. When I say this is a direct bolt in- swap- that is exactly what I mean . Took 3 hours total. My little 235 may get to stay in a little longer - I may just hold on to the late model 250 and mounts that I intended on putting in shortly . I am still goin to , But with six inches of frozen crap on the ground , and my shop not being heated very well, I can afford to wait.

i put a 250 to replace the 216 in my truck this summer and am lovin the change. 4.11 gears are still a little big in my opinion but i dont think i want to drive over 60 for handling/safety reasons haha.
