Voltage Regulator problem I think
Is there away that a electrical system can put out to may volts?
I seem to be having a problem when my truck starts the starter make a high pick noise then it starts fine before I started it I checked the voltage on the battery anf it had 18.5 volts (which is way to high) on it and after I started it is was 19.4 what does this mean is my alternator shot or is it my voltage regulator It looks very old. Common sense tells me it is the regulator because the system is still charging. |

Voltage regulator. You may want to disconnect the connector on your alternator until you replace the regulator. Too much juice to the battery may cause it to explode

Sounds like a good opportunity to switch to an internally regulated alternator and do away with an archaic voltage regulator to me. You'll be glad you did if you change over.

first I dont think you can have 18.5 volts on the battery if it is not running. I think you better check you volt meter before you go any further.

I have to agree with Custom68....you'd be blowing fuses and little lights at almost 20 volts.
However, if in fact you are getting that kind of power out of it all, I'd swap over to the intenral set up. |
