I need some help convincing the wife ....updated..
so I already have one 63 truck in the garage i am doing the floor boards on , but I have found another 63 that would be a start on a new project .. My wife is real cool , but I thought maybe I could find a real smooth talker on here to give just the right words to help persuade her .. I'm not going to try the " I bought it for you" line either , thats out ....

Re: I need some help convincing the wife ......
i have been going through this for alot of years!! and if you really need it!! then do it and take the abuse from her it is easier than trying to convince her for a long time to buy into it!!! also if she is cool she will get over it in a short time. that doesnt mean you couldnt take her to dinner or something to ease the pain! hope this helps!

Re: I need some help convincing the wife ......
Have any children? Build it for one of them. My eleven year old son loves, and I mean loves the old hot rod truck. But then again, my wife knows how I am, so as long as my obsession does not hurt the household budget (such as it is these days) its all good. I currently have the 63, my 57 Belair i've had since I was 15, and a 72 Skylark that really is for my wife. (I did use the I got it for you line to ease the pain, but she really likes the car, so it's hers now !)
Good luck, and remind her that if you wait, the price will only be higher later!

Re: I need some help convincing the wife ......
I have learned that if I want a big purchase for myself, I have to provide a comparable one for the wife!
So maybe you should buy TWO new trucks... one for you and one for her! LOL

Re: I need some help convincing the wife ......
After 25 years of bringing stuff home my wife gave up. I do tell her ahead of time what i am doing and sometimes you can see the steam rising. My toy fund supports all my hobbies and I never do anything that affects the house hold funds so that helps. I do get questioned some times about how much money is in the toy fund but that is a well kept secret. I tell here "Oh I sold what ever and used that money" and that helps also. Kissing some serious back side also helps.

Re: I need some help convincing the wife ......
I think ruthchris is already planned for tomorrow night (her birthday) so that is one down .. the "toy fund is usually the wallet , she does ask how much is in it from time to time ,(because some of it may belong to the business) and it is funded by misc. part sales here and there ..and since it takes us close to Chi town we could make a night of it .. yeah more than one guy here has had all these same thoughts , I am sure , thanks guys...

Re: I need some help convincing the wife ......
Every time I bring something home it's usally in the driveway and I'm just unloading it as she pulls up. She throws up her hands when I say Honney look wat (whoever) at work gave me. She then says DON'T EVEN TALK TO ME ABOUT IT I DON'T WANT TO KNOW. After I get things cleaned up she calms down and tehn just pretends it's not there. But I don't use any of the household money to fund anything. It's all overtime money and what I can scrounge up.
She might be ok if it's not taking up too much room and looks neat and tidy when your not working on it. then agin there's that saying "If Mama's not happy then no one's going to be happy"

Re: I need some help convincing the wife ......
if you've already got ruth chris lined up, then I think you're almost there... maybe when dessert comes, that's when you should inform her that you bought HER a new truck. You can let her have a 49% vote on the paint color too!

Marriage is about making decisions together especially those decisions that are monetary. Smooth talkers will get you into trouble every time. Just be honest and talk it over with her, tell her what your plan is and see what she says. Buying a second truck sure as heck isn't worth putting a wedge between you and your wife. This advice comes from an old guy who has (2) Hot Rods, a '69 Camaro, the '65 Chevy C10 and (3) ho-humish daily drivers. Been happily married (once) for 30 years. If it wasn't for my wife I'd be car poor and pennyless. Good luck! Last edited by lakeroadster; 02-10-2011 at 08:12 AM. |

Re: I need some help convincing the wife ......
I just bought my truck a month or so ago, the wife found out about it when the tow truck was unloading it in the driveway, same thing happened with my Catalina convert and she woke up one morning about three years ago to a new 69 elCamino

Re: I need some help convincing the wife ......
Man, I'd just talk to her about it and act like she is giving you advise about the purchase. You will know that you are already going to do the deal but make it seem like she is part of the decision. Not like you asking your dad for permission, but like two people making an agreement together.
I do that to my wife all the time and she feels like the purchase is her decision as well as mine. It would be a GREAT discussion over a steak and her second or third glass of wine. I also have 4 daughters to get trucks built for, so if I see a good deal I can call her pretty quick and even have her get cash for me. Good luck!! |

Re: I need some help convincing the wife ......
Just do what I did, am building the wife a new house so I can house my 3 pickups and my suburban in the garage. I keep telling her I am parting 2 of them out, has worked out so far.Now I don't even tell her what I buy and she doesn't care. I have a truck fund and a house fund, as long as it comes out of the truck fund shes fine.

Re: I need some help convincing the wife ......
I agree with Lakeroadster, since I am a divorced guy and through out my entire marriage, anything and I mean anything I wanted to buy for my truck I talked with her about it prior, however it didnt matter with her, she threw a fit even if I didnt end up buying whatever I was thinking about buying. I call my truck my mistress of 25 years just because I still have it after the divorce.
You should speak to her about it, then you both come to a decision about the purchase. Live with it and like it, no matter how it comes out. Oh and neither of you should hold it against the other.

Well guys , I have the coolest wife .. I already knew that anyways , but she saw an email I sent from work to home so she was preprepared for the conversation ... She didn't even mention I had one that was not done in the garage .. her exact words were " I trust your judgement " ... yup she is a keeper .......

Re: I need some help convincing the wife ......
The wife was making noises about me having more than one truck, said you can only drive one at a time. So I took her by the hand led her to the closet and pointed at all her shoes[Hermelda Marcos would have been proud] and said you can only wear one pair at a time. She has been quiet about my pickups ever since cause she doesn't want for anything anyway, bless her heart...Vernski
