I painted mine totally dissasembled and off the truck. Let the paint cure so that it doesnt chip easily and put masking tape along the edges before re assembly, this will help to prevent scratches and chips. Hang your door and install your felts/weather stripping and glass. I have also painted the jams and then hung the doors before painting the outside. You then have a paint line on the jam but it isn't easy to see.
