454 Question
So a buddy is tearing down his mud bogger and is wanting to sell me his 454. Its stock and runs but has recently develped a knock, so he is going back to his 350. He only wants $75 bucks for the complete motor minus the carb and distributor. My question is how hard and expensive is it to get about 500-600 horse from this motor? It doesnt sound like its that difficult to get 1hp/1ci from what i have seen. Any thoughts or suggestions?

Re: 454 Question
Yes, it is not too difficult to reach 500 bhp from a BBC. But, in your case, I would have the block thoroughly checked. Good luck.

Re: 454 Question
How hard and how expensive it is to 500 or 600 greatly depends on what you are starting with. Getting 500 is a lot easier than 600 out of a 454. Any ideas of what is in the motor he wants to sell you and how much water and dirt has been through it?

Re: 454 Question
Try to get the casting numbers off the heads and block. If you can find out if it has a cast or steal crank?

Re: 454 Question
I dont think its had any water or dirt in it, but Im sure some could have made its way in. Its just a bone stock from a 70s or 80s truck. I think I may have decided against it. I havnt even put 600 miles on my 350, and have enough trouble keeping the tires stuck to the ground.
