Question Gas Gauge & Sending Unit Remove/Test

1971 Chevy Cheyenne 10 Fleetside Long Bed, 2WD, 350/4bbl, AT.
Seeking instructions to remove & test:
(a) Dash gas gauge.
(b) Gas tank sending unit.
Diagrams would be plus.

Re: Gas Gauge & Sending Unit Remove/Test

Here is a link to a page that has a drawing and instructions for troubleshooting gas gauge problems.

http://www.6066gmcguy.org/Electrical-02.htm

Worked well for me on my 69 GMC a few years back.

Re: Gas Gauge & Sending Unit Remove/Test

Disconnect the sending unit wire. Ground it out and the gauge should move (to empty I believe) with the key on.

The resistance on the sending unit should read 0-90 ohms from the post to ground.

Just replaced mine and works fine now. Classic Chevy had the best price $30, that I found. LMC was $50.

Yes the gauge should read empty if you ground the sender wire with the key on. Also if you unplug the sender wire from the fuse panel, the gauge should read full plus to the three o:clock position.

I believe you meant to say that the SENDING unit should read between 0 and 90 ohms depending on the float position.

Re: Gas Gauge & Sending Unit Remove/Test

Well the good tech has been covered but I have a question regarding the pole, what does it pertain to?

Edit>>> I mean poll.

So much for the request!

Pole or Poll?

To strip or not to strip, is that the question?

Re: Gas Gauge & Sending Unit Remove/Test

Well this non-existant pole has helped me. I found it by by accident searching for gas gauge fixes. Poll, pole, or Pole, I don't care. I now know my sender is the problem, so thanks to all.
Back to your regularly scheduled pole, with no question.
