Thermostat Questions
Hey Guys,
I need to pick up a thermostat switch for my electric fan. Does anyone have any recommendations of which style, probe or screw in, adjustable or non adjustable. Im looking at one from hayden that has a probe that goes into the radiator hose or down into the radiator itself. Sounds like some people even run it thru the radiator fins. Its adjustable and in my price range.....cheap!!! I have read a lot of positive reviews about this product. http://www.summitracing.com/parts/HDA-3653/?rtype=10 I have 2 locations on the intake to use if I go with the thread in type http://www.summitracing.com/parts/PRF-30111/?rtype=10 If anyone has experience with these setups I would really appreicate some info before I pick one up. thanks brian

Re: Thermostat Questions
Screw into the block with at least 10* higher than the thermostat opening.
That switch provides a ground to your relay which will complete the circuit to the + wire on the fan

Re: Thermostat Questions
yep, good clarification solid, I think mine is a 190 on 170 off, or 195 on 170 off but the thermostat is a 180. that way the fan only comes on when needed, usually not moving at idle..

Re: Thermostat Questions
I've been running the SPAL screw into the head style for 10 years with no issues (non adjustable). It's simple and it works....and I don't feel this is an area that needs to be over-complicated with adjustability.

Re: Thermostat Questions
I have the kind that goes into the fins on radiator in my 64. It's adjusted to turn the fan on as soon as the thermostat opens up. I have used it for 2 years and in some really hot weather including driving in parades and traffic at GG's in Des Moines still working good

Re: Thermostat Questions
awesome info!!! Great point about using a sensor that is slightly above the thermostat setting.
I called around a few junkyards, they wanted between 25 and 40 bucks. At that price, Im going to just pick up a new one. Here is the fan that Im looking at. I am pretty tight on space so I like the fact that it is reversible. http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/SUPER...Q5fAccessories with this relay, circuit breaker kit http://cgi.ebay.com/ebaymotors/FAN-T...Q5fAccessories any thoughts??

overall, i think of them as unreliable, plus they're a large, clunky thing underhood. the best way in my opinion is what was mentioned above. use a factory replacement fan switch sensor... I have owned 5 third generation camaros, and because of that, that is the sensor-switch I use.. just because im fimilar with it... but it works like they said. the sensor screws into the block or the head. when it reaches its preset temp, it grounds its single wire to the block/head that its screwed into. that single wire will ground your fan relay, and kick the fan on. the fan relay should have ignition power to its switch coil, and fused constant power to the fans power side... that way the fan only comes on when the key is on, but it doesnt draw power through the ignition switch. if you need a diagram i'll take the time to make one for you.... |

Re: Thermostat Questions
I ordered it on friday. The info on the ebay page was a good read as well. I happened to run into a few rodder buddies of mine at a cruise in last night. a couple of them have bought this exact fan from skip white perfromance. They love them and havent had any issues. You cant beat the price. Hopefully Im as satisfied as they are. This is pretty much tht last thing I need to take care for before getting my project on the road. I cant freakin wait!!!!
