Steering Coumn mate up
HI folks,
I got the steering wheel and column back from the painter last week. I will try to mount it up Saturday. I added Power steering to the truck by using the CPP adaptor and a new P/S pump and gear box from a later model chevy (like others have). I now need to figure out how to measure and cut the steering column rod that goes into the CPP shaft. I've read where you are suppose to have a really great weld on it but the new CPP shaft is built with a "D" notch (I'm gong to try to weld it in at least a few spots but would like to hook up with some one who has done this before for some help. Jake

Re: Steering Coumn mate up
So you are using a CPP steering column shaft? Can you post a pic of it so we can get a better idea what you're working with?

Re: Steering Coumn mate up
Capt.
I think I might be explaining it wrong. This is the kit from CPP http://rides.webshots.com/photo/2917...54402330WGFnpP What I need to do is cut my OEM shaft that comes in from the steerign wheel shorter to mate up with the new parts from CPP. Does that sound better? I remember there was a article on the conversion in Classic Trucks, but because the new CPP shadt had a "D" shape I figure I need to also shape my OEM shaft end to fit into the CPP shaft part and weld it up. Thanks Jake

Re: Steering Coumn mate up
You need a coupling that is double swivel that has the DD on one side and a smooth round opening on the other, you drill a hole in the shaft about 1/4" deep and that is where the set screw holds onto your original shaft that you cut.
something like this. http://www.borgeson.com/xcart/catalo...ore-p-473.html

Re: Steering Coumn mate up
I'm assuming that, that CPP lower column is hollow? If so I believe it should be 3/4" on the ID, check to be sure. If so, what I would do is cut that piece below the double 'D' section. Then you will cut your original steering column shaft a little short of the rag joint. Then slide the shortened lower column over the original shaft. Bolt the lower piece to the rag joint, and then bolt the column in place. Next drill a 17/64" hole thru the CPP piece and the original shaft. Insert a 1/4" grade 8 bolt, lock nut and tighten. Then you can weld the connection once you are certain it is where you want it.

Re: Steering Coumn mate up
Spent a few hours getting the coulmn mounted so I can approx. the layout on the new P/S unit. From what I see I may not or will not have to use the knuckle joint? I took a lot of pictures and have put them in here. This is what I have and could use some ideas from those who have been down this road before. I have the CPP kit adaptor from the mounting plate on the P/S unit/gearbox which came with the short black tube.
When I lay out my shaft it looks real close, BUT I will need to shorten it at least 2-3" to lay inside the CPP adaptor? Also I noticed that the OEM rag joint holes are smaller than the newer ones. I suppose I need to not only shorten it, but flatten the sides with a grinder and drill a "lock pin" hole through it.
