gas gauge in 89 past full
I am hoping someone can help me with some specifics. I have an 89 suburban, 350, 700r 2wd, no tach in dash. Since I have gotten it last year, the gas gauge has been pegged past full. I have searched the forums, and gotten a feel, but the advice that the gas gauge wire is plugged into the side of the fuse panel doesn't seem to fit my specific vehicle.
I had it at the mechanic, he said he tested the sender when he replaced the fuel pump, and it was good. He said it was the gauge. I took out the cluster, cleaned contacts with a eraser, replaced with a new gauge from LMC. It promptly went way past full as soon as it was hooked up. I have cleaned the ground wire to the sender from the tank and reattached. It would really help me if someone has worked through this problem on a similar model. I have taken out the fuse labeled gauge , but it made no difference in the reading. Is there something I can disconnect to get the gauge to read empty? My thinking is as follows: It is likely not the sender, or it would read weird and move around some, and the mechanic checked it, although that is nota guarantee. It is unlikely two gauges would be broken exactly the same way, so it is likely a wiring problem? Any help is greatly appreciated.

Re: gas gauge in 89 past full
I had the same problem on my 77. There is a round plug on the firewall, just behind the carburetor, more to the driver's side than anything else. Its about the size of a nickel. Make sure that the proper wire is plugged into that.

Re: gas gauge in 89 past full
a break in the sender wire will make it go past the full
try grounding the sending wire it should go empty or run a temp/test wire to replace the sending wire

Re: gas gauge in 89 past full
I am unable to make it go empty by grounding.
