Looking for a measurement

Can someone give me the width of the bed strips. I'm getting ready to route the grooves for my bed floor.

Re: Looking for a measurement

Can't help with the strip width since my truck didn't come with any, but here's a link that might help. I am planning on making my own also when I get that far.

Re: Looking for a measurement

this is where it's at IMO.

http://www.gmcpauls.com/47-72_BedWood_Info.htm

you don't really need a router, you can do it with a table saw and a Dado blade, or even with a 1/8" kerf blade if you've got a little patience. See the little diagram.

Re: Looking for a measurement

Task force strip. Its a bit rusty but intact, measures right at 1.5 iches, that is 1 1/2.

And if you go to that GMC pauls site and scroll down to the picture that shows "D" and "C" the dimensions add up to .75
and since they butt together that makes 1.5, just go by that picture.

Not sure I'm following you on adding 3/4". There is a row of bolts between each board that holds the strips down. wood don't touch wood "that would just be wrong" lol

Re: Looking for a measurement

Don't know, my boards were a mess. The strip does measure 1.5 iches wide. I was just commenting on the drawing on that other site.
Okay after looking at the old wood piece, the wood just touches the bolt barely, so if its a 5/16 bolt, thats 19/32 on each side.

Re: Looking for a measurement

you need a little room across the grain, that's the way wood expands. it doesn't expand much the long way, along the grain. you need at least 1/16' inch on either side of the bolts.

Re: Looking for a measurement

I din't mean for everyone to get into a debate. I'm just using some finish grade plywood. The 1 1/2 measurment is what I needed. Thanks to everyone. Heres the pic of what I got done.

Re: Looking for a measurement

I was planning on doing the exact same thing. what was the width of plywood that you used? I cant find a piece wide of enough, std is 48" x 96". I need a piece around 50 inches wide. Please some pix once you get your strips in. BTW the color is a great choice. Are you going to paint your strips or go with chrome?

thanks

Re: Looking for a measurement

It is a standerd 4x8 sheet of ply. My bed is 50" across but after bagging it I needed to raise the floor and reinforce the bed sides. I used 1 1/2" uni strut bolted to the bed sides. This brought the measuement to 47". I used some 3/4x 3 pressure treated runners to fit into the strut. My floor will bolt to the runners allowing me to slide my floor out if I ever need to work on my suspension or batterys. I'll posts some pics later.

Re: Looking for a measurement

thanks so much for posting the pix. that really helps me picture what i was thinking. Im think Im going to call my metal shop and price some 1" x 2" c channel that is 3/4" deep ( or whatever thickness my plywood sheet is). That way I can slid the sheet into the channel and have it flush. Im figuring I can weld the channel from the underside to the bed and then run my cross sills underneath it.

thanks again!!!
