body side mouldings
I was wondering if anyone has used any of the "repop" mouldings or kits. I am going to redo my 79 Siverado and about half of the mouldings are junk. I found some Gm ones but they add up real quick for a complete set(last time I checked it was around 1200.00). I have seen some reproduction ones and was just wondering on the quality of them.

For what year and what trim level are you talking about?

79 Silverado....GM would be pretty spendy. I was thinking about using the older style on my 84, but haven't done any price checking yet.

It is a 79 Siverado with the upper and lower mouldings going down both sides and around the tailgate. It also has the three piece moulding around the cab.

My suggestion is order one piece from the aftermarket suppliers and see for yourself. I have ordered parts from most of the bigger guys now. One part will come in looking awesome, then the next item will look like junk.
I haven't priced the GM trim yet, but my guess is it's worth it. Find some way to get a discount, and consider it money well spent....

I here ya on the money well spent,I work as a painter at a local GM dealer and we are always fussin about the afterberth junk the insurance companies make us use. I want to leave it origianal because it goes with the GM stuff. It is black with a silver insert and roof. I was toying with the idea of two toning it from the body line up black and from the line down silver,if I can't find any decent trim.

It sounds like a pretty cool color combo. If your going for the restored look, you gotta spend the greenies, and get frsh trim to make it work. Throw on new window trim, and fresh chrome on the bumpers and mirrors too. That makes a huge difference.... |

Yeah, but most of the stuff isn't available through work. I have all new sheetmetal,so the only holes would be the ones in the cab. I kind of want to keep it original because it is a four wheel drive and I'm not sure how the paint would look with the ralleys. It has a two and a half inch lift with 33's on ralleys. Your truck looks pretty sweet,is it a 77? Mine is the same way, except with a silver insert and roof, also has black in the mouldings instead of the gold.

Yeah, like I said, if your going for an original look, it has to have the trim. I was told by a GM parts guy that all of the trim was available. I guess he was wrong.
Yes, mine is a 77. One year only for the yellow(gold) insert color. I have a couple of pieces that have dings too. I would like to replace them, but haven't found any original 77 trim yet. I'm stilll looking though. Post pics of yours so we can see how it's coming... |

Thanx for all the help. Maybe the stuff is still available, sometimes our parts guys don't like to look up the old stuff. The yellow stuff is definately harder to come buy,I have a buddy with a yellow and cream 77 with the yellow trim. He found some nos stuff from a guy,but only three peices. Have to leave it original, just have to hunt the stuff down. Haven't started on this one yet, still hunting down parts for it. Also have too many irons in the fire at the moment. A 68 CST two wheel drive,72 K20,and an 87 S10 that will have a nasty SBC soon.

Do you guys have any tips on removing the chrome moulding during restoration so it can be reused?

bigblock73,thanks for the link to the nos trim. Unfortunately I was the high bidder but wasn't able to be around at the end of the auction and lost out by a buck and a half
