broken brakes
I have a 63 c-10 i converted over to 4 wheel power disc brakes (ccp) the left brake doesn't fit square with the rotor it looks like it's dragging WHY ?
the whole system has been replaced but the brake pedal doesn't feel solid like just the back brakes are the only ones working. I have power bled them several times. do i put on a new master cylinder to see if that helps ? I thought it would stop on a dime but i'm almost afraid to drive it I guess some of you guys have had similar problems? |

Is the problem caliper on the left front or left rear?

I have heard of someone putting the left on the rightside and the right on the leftside. where are the bleeders when you look at it. At the top or bottom?

did u bench bleed your master? you have to do it by hand first before u install onto th fire wall..how is your metering valve? new/used?.

If your caliper is not square , you will never get rid of the spngy pedal .. That is the first thing you need to fix .. pull the caliper and see how square the bracket is , check all 4 if it is not square that is what needs to be fixed...

actually it's the right rear not the left that's dragging
the bleeders are on top the system had been power bled several times the whole system is new |

Did all of the boxes look good upon receipt? I have seen the mounting tabs for the calipers be slightly tweaked which will cause what you are describing. It could have happened in shipping. Have you taken it all back apart and checked to see if it is seated properly? Is the rotor seated to the flange ( is there a lugnut or two holding the rotor tight against the mounting surface? If not it will hang funny.) Also, in you o/p you asked if you should change the master, is it new now? Is it for 4 wheel disc? Wow, I asked alot of questions......sorry.

Lets fix this first then see where we are at .....If you want to see if this is the biggest problem , simply use a pair of vise grips and pinch off the line , if the spongy pedal goes away you have found the problem...or take the caliper off and lay something solid but with parralel sides in it and test the pedal............. the whole system is new the master is for 4 wheel disc along with the prop valve

If it is a rear caliper that is out of alignment with the rotor, then either the brackets are not assembled correctly, or one of them is bent.

Are you getting enough vacuum. I had two big of a intake manifold which was causing me to not have enough vacuum. Also if you cam is to big that might be causing it also. I also had the wrong size torque converter and that caused my brakes to not work as well. I also had the problem of having the calipers on the wrong side which makes it imposable to bleed the brakes.

The first clue was the caliper was difficult to install: The caliper pin should protrude this far: Correct GM brake setup: This bump was too long: My temporary fix: If it were counter bored, a spacer may not have been needed at all. Here it is bottomed out: Here is the new part and correct setup: FYI: Just looking at photos of the brake conversion that Speedway Motors sells, their part is made correctly. I think their kit is cheaper too. The suck thing about this is that I had to send these photos to CPP to convince them it was their problem. It took over two weeks to get it corrected. I should have returned the kit on day one and purchased the Speedway kit. If they are still selling this kit with the incorrect part, please let me know. I will definately bend their ear on this, especially after charging me shipping recently, to replace a stainless brake line that leaked upon initial install.
