Gas Tank Options

I've been reading up on LS swaps and was wondering about the return line options. Rather than buying a new tank, would it be ok to tap into the tank's fill hose for a return line?

I don't have any real plans to do this, just trying to gather some knowledge on the subject.

Also, I can't seem to find the difference between these corvette filter/regulators and the other types. Lots of mentions about them, but nothing explaining the difference. Can someone clue me in?

I dont see a problem with using the filler neck as a return location exept the 72 & down behind the seat tanks.....Not much of a filler neck to use.

The corvette filter/regulator is used with "returnless fuel rails", The fuel pressure regulator is "built in the filter". This is only needed with 04 & up truck engines, 99-02 F-body & of course Corvette engines.

I have seen this done on a few builds. (can't remember exactly which ones). They just brazed or soldered another fitting and shot it right back into the tank.

Thats pretty much what we did with my fuel cell. I had an extra fitting in the top that used to be for a breather; we used it as a return point and switched to a breathable cap.

And Cline, my engine is an 04 truck engine and it still has a return style system.

in my 71 it has a 'emissions' tanke so it has a lot of 'ports' on it so I ran the return line to one of the ports at the filler neck. when filling up and the truck running you can see fuel dumping back into the neck.

If it really is a 04 you have a engine from a Cab/Chassis or Van platform. And in my OPINION LQ9s are the only swap worthy 6.0s.

hey hey hey it all depends on what your looking for Lq4 motors are great expecially if your planning on dumping a turbo or supercharger in the future. and they also make great power with a cam swap. and lets face it dollar for dollar you get more bang for the buck caus every yahoo who has a lq9 for sale thinks its made of gold.

bring any LQ9 to the line, we'll see what happens against the LQ4 in my heap...its just a junkyard van motor in a 40year old truck...dont be scared

It was a service truck, so i think it would fall under the cab/chassis category.


The only difference in the engines is flat top pistons, which ain't worth paying nearly double the price for. Only thing is you can say its the Caddy motor instead of just a "Truck" motor. Now if you wanna start to talk about the L92, then you have an argument, but the lq9 ain't nothing special.

I second that besides most are looking for a stout base to build upon what kind of bragging rights is it to say "oh yea well i got a stock lq9" WOW! a whole 345 at the crank that should get ya well into the 17 's

Sorry to build on the hijackedness of this thread but you guys have me wondering now. I have been looking for a 6.0 for a few years now. I haven't been able to find one in my area that is cheap enough to pull the trigger on. Exactly how many ponies are we talking about between the LQ4 and LQ9? I had thought all along a 6 liter is a 6 liter unless it's a high output version? Is this the L92 version? I'm more confused now than ever........

I've got another 6.0 not mentioned....its a gen IV with L92/LS3 style heads...an LY6. While it does have VVT (which I removed), it does not had DOD.

The lq9 was listed at about 345, and the lq4 lists 325-335 depending on where you look. So 10 hp. Its nothing like the Lq4 vs Ls2 differences.

For me the advantage of the truck block was the most displacement I could get, at one of the lowest price points. You can usually buy a complete lq4 + cam kit for less than an lq9.

the LY6 also has slightly higher compression, 9.65:1 vs 9.4:1 for the LQ4.
pistons are also cut with valve reliefs for the bigger L92/LS3 heads valves

Thanks for all the talk guys...I've been on the board for a long time, but never this portion of it really. I've always wanted EFI in my ride for the sake of it just starting easy, possilbe mpg gains and just plain cool factor. My ride starts right now easy with 2 pumps of the gas pedal, and I don't really need/want added HP as it's just a cruiser...so I'm wondering if the time and $$$ is worth a LS swap in my situation....opinions?

My question came because I have a Boyd tank right now, but it's not set up for EFI and I don't really want to drop $$$ in another one and was considering a cheaper alternative.

The Boyd tank looks really good to me, I just didn't have the extra cash to pull the trigger on one. I'm not sure what kind of baffles he puts in the efi tank? In any case you would be able to sell your regular tank easy and invest in the efi tank. Just a thought.

I'm also interested to see what other tank options there are. I have a 72 burb and just dropped my old one today. Just curious of what other applications would work. I'm doing a budget swap.

There's baffles in the tank I have...do they have to be a certain kind?

Oh...and I probably could sell it but there's already a dent in it from when I let my brother drive it...

cheapest way is to run a camaro tank and pump the whole set up cost me 90 bucks

87-91 blazer/suburban tanks fit and are already set up for efi.
