New Exhaust Too Quiet
I recently replaced my 18" glasspacks with 40 series flowmasters. LT Headers to 2 1
/4" pipe to mufflers than turndown right at axle. It is the quietest aftermarket exhaust I have ever owned. I can hear my fan more than exhaust,. I always thought the original 40 series was pretty loud, especially dumped under the bed. I had 40s on an 03 silverado with LT's and no cats and it was much louder, sounded awesome. What gives? Re: New Exhaust Too Quiet
Have you had someone else drive it and you stand outside and listen to it? Also new mufflers will get louder after awhile.

Re: New Exhaust Too Quiet
That is weird, I've got 40s, long tube headers, and 3" duals out in front of the rear tires, and its definitely way loud! Maybe they sent you the wrong muffler when you ordered it?

Re: New Exhaust Too Quiet
Could they be installed backwards. With dumps just about any system will be louder, the 2 1/4" pipes will cut some of the volume but not that much with dumps.

Re: New Exhaust Too Quiet
I checked the numbers on them, they are definately original 40's. They are not installed backwards. I called flowmaster to verify the numbers on them to make sure they were 40's. He said that the 2 1/4" pipes is the reason it is so quiet. Don't get me wrong, its not silent, but it just isn't very loud at all. They are 2.5" mufflers, do you think if I switched over to 2.5" pipe it would be noticeably louder? Or maybe put some bigger exhaust tips after the muffler, but still leave it dumped before the axle?

Re: New Exhaust Too Quiet
Put a couple 4x18 or 3.5x18 inch tips dumping down and it should deepen the tone. Me personally, id cut the flows off and put a cherry bomb extreme in its place

If you have neighbors you may want to leave it alone if you want to stay on good terms with them. Just a thought...

Re: New Exhaust Too Quiet
It seems like Flowmasters get louder after some time. I know it sounds weird, it's all solid welded steel inside so nothing should change. My theory is that after some soot builds up inside, it changes the way sound bounces around inside.

Re: New Exhaust Too Quiet
I had the same exact setup dj it was fairly noisy, it would vibrate the house on a cold start

Re: New Exhaust Too Quiet
Just wait they will break in. I was pissed the first time i started my truck after my engine swap and new exhaust. Drove it for a few days and it got way loud. I have lq4 with stock manifolds and 2 1/4 pipes into 40s with h pipe and tips and it was almost silent. Now i wish i had a louder radio....
