firewall pad with sound deadener?

I'm debating whether I should order a new firewall pad if I'm also going to cover that part of the firewall with the foil-back-type sound deadener - ?
I haven't checked the fit of my new carpet to see how far up under the dash it will go, but I definitely don't want the shiny silver backing staring at me.
So how have you guys attacked this problem?
Firewall pad OVER the deadener? Will the stock fasteners work with both (the sound deadener I have is maybe 3/16 - 1/4" thick)?

i was wondering the samething! i'm leaning to doing the sound deadener under the pad just to have a lil more sound an heat out of the cab, but it's more up to you i would guess!! the fasteners will be able to go thru the deadener cause it stick out about a half inch or more on the firewall side!

i used both a stick on mat & the repro firewall pad on top of it.

Not sure on this one but I installed carpet into my 'burb and I think it meets at the bottom of the firewall pad. I wanted it to be 12'' higher Maybe you could check with 'oem' on here and see what his original trucks have installed.

OK, I kind of thought what you guys are saying, but didn't want to find out the hard way I was wrong.
My original pad was the thick insulation-backed cardboard with push-through plastic fasteners, although I've seen a non-insulated rubber version for sale on a couple of sites; will stick with the original if I can make it work. Thanks.

I tried one of those cardboard pads-POS! I used sound deadener and foil backed pad, with carpeting. If I were to use a molded carpet and it was short, I'd get matching carpet for any exposed area. Most carpet sellers have matching carpet available-i.e. ACC and others.

I would use the foil based sound deadner (I used roof repair material from home depot)

we then added a/c duct insulation that has a sticky back and a foil cover, sealed all that up with silver tape.

Then added the standard insulation pad.

We used a full length and full height rubber mat so we could do the entire floor. do not have that installed yet. but it is quiet....Kieth

I used Peel and Seal. Comes in a 6" wide roll for about $12 for I think 30'. It took 6 rolls to do the entire cab from the top of the gas tank to the underside of the dash. I also ran a strip on the back side of each door panel.

World of difference. It has it's drawbacks, though. It melts in the heat, but so far hasn't been an issue around here, I just hope I never try to remove it. I have heard people say it stinks like roof tar when it's hot but only when new. I haven't noticed, but I also haven't been driving it.

There are better products out there that are designed to do the job. But in all honesty, unless you are building a car for sound comps it works great. If you have the coin or connections to Ram Mat or Fat Mat, I would use that instead. But when my truck is together, you won't know it's roof material under there. It is as quiet as a Cadillac. I haven't driven it since I put down my foam pad and carpet. But with just the Peel and Seal, it was a different truck.

It's about 1/8" thick or less. If you have a stereo shop near by, get a wooden roller, helps the install.

<edit> I spent under $100 for my whole floor. Deadener, 1/2" industrial carpet pad, 2 yards of top quality carpet.

Still a few wrinkles in the carpet, but it's close.
