A Few LS3 Crate Motor Questions

This is a 6.2L LS3 crate motor W/ LS3 controller kit 19201861 and corvette accessory drive kit 19155067. Transmission is a T56 Magnum.

I do not have an Emission Purge Solenoid, do I need one? If not can I remove the item below and do I need to plug the fitting on the drivers side behind the throttle body?

Re: A Few LS3 Crate Motor Questions

The controller came with a plug labled oil pressure, however it does not fit where "I" think it should. What am I missing here?

Re: A Few LS3 Crate Motor Questions

I think this is an optional crank case vent, am I correct and if so can I just leave it the way it is?

Thanks,

Re: A Few LS3 Crate Motor Questions

Vehicle speed sensor and the oil pressure are not needed for operation. You can buy sensor 12616646 that will have the proper connection for the oil pressure sensor, then you could tie into the bulkhead. From what I've found so far the emissions can be removed and plugged off, and the crank vent can remain plugged. I'm actually researching those as well as the steam hose and a few other items (power steering connection, coolant flow, ect) today for my own project. If I come across something that says otherwise I'll let you know.

You do not need EVAP, but if the controller requires it not hooking it up will give you a check engine light.

Some say you don't need it, others argue that no VSS signal will cause stalling issues. If the controller system offers cruise control it will not work with out a VSS signal.

Thanks,
Pretty sure thats you PCV valve-needed.

Again you do not need this, but if the controller is set up to use it, not hooking it up will cause problems.

A quick search led me to this, looks like some good info for you. Hope this helps:

Re: A Few LS3 Crate Motor Questions

This wiring harness and controller system doesn't have connections for the evap. Manual states that both the VSS and OPS are not necessary. I removed the oil pressure sensor and installed one that came with my Dakota Digital kit. I would assume this would be the most logical route rather than buying 12616646 as I'm not sure the bulkhead output would be compatible with most gauges anyway. From the way the manual reads, it looks like you would check it with a volt meter and then use PSI=(sensor voltagex32)-16.

Re: A Few LS3 Crate Motor Questions

I agree my manual says VSS & OPS are not necessary and the harness does not have a connection for the evap. The exploded view of the motor simply lables the PVC Vent located on the rear of the drivers side valve cover as "Plug". There is a PCV hose (loop) located just behind the throttle body labled PCV Dirty air. PVC fresh air is located on the front of the passenger side valve cover.

Cobra, sounds like you have the same controller?

Re: A Few LS3 Crate Motor Questions

I browsed through your build thread, it looks like we have identical setups. What type of A/C setup are you going to be running? It looked like you have the compressor from the GMPP accessory drive setup, if you are going vintage air it apparently won't work due to being a variable compressor.

What are your plans for mounting your ECM and fuse box? I've been thinking of trying to find room for mine inside the cab to keep things clean under the hood, but with the vintage air setup room is getting pretty tight.

Re: A Few LS3 Crate Motor Questions

On the a/c I haven't gotten that far yet. I would also like to keep the engine compartment as clean as I can, but too much between now and then. Do you have a build thread?

Progress has been slow for the last 6 months. I'm hoping to try and order most of the odds and ends and missing pieces of the puzzle this week. I start a new position at work next week that has a very favorable schedule as far as getting work done (4 on, 5 off, 5 on, 5 off, 5 on, 4 off).

Re: A Few LS3 Crate Motor Questions

Talked to vintage about the a/c. They have a bracket to move the compressor to the top, also have to use their compressor. Sounds like the easiest way to complete that part of the project so I ordered it. Also order a dakota VHX gages.

Any progress or pics of the bracket installed?

Did you find out what you needed for the oil pressure sensor? Was it part #12616646, having same problem here

Re: A Few LS3 Crate Motor Questions

In the manual there is a part number that will work with the harness. That sensor is not needed in order to run, so depending on what gauges you are using you can just go with an aftermarket sensor/gauge.

Im using auto meter american muscle gauges, came with this sender for the half sweep gauges; issue is, its too big and hits the manifold... what did you end up doing?

Re: A Few LS3 Crate Motor Questions

I am using Dakota Digital. My sensor fit without issue. Would you be able to use a 45 degree elbow to bring the top of the sensor away from the manifold?

Re: A Few LS3 Crate Motor Questions

I was actually browsing now for one before having to fabricate.... you have had no issues with the sensor not being hooked up or does the dakota digital have the ability to still hook the sensor up?

Re: A Few LS3 Crate Motor Questions

Sorry I was trying to type one handed and was a bit shy on clairification (dog was sleeping across my lap lol).

I am running the sensor that was included with my Dakota Digital kit, and it will be tied directly in to the Dakota Digital computer. It is a very small sensor and fit in place of the factory sensor without any clearance issues.

Not having the sensor hooked up will not cause any operational issues according to the manual (not required by the computer). Though, I would certainly want to have one hooked up to keep an eye on it.

Re: A Few LS3 Crate Motor Questions

On the GMPP controller harness, what is the connector labeled 'oil press' going to? The ecu? What would be the purpose of the connector taking the output of the sensor to the ecu if the signal isn't needed to operate? I understand the concept of needing a pressure adapter to integrate your existing oil pressure gauge, but why the oil press connector in the harness?

Re: A Few LS3 Crate Motor Questions

holy old thread dude....

You usually just wire the oil pressure sending unit right to the gauge, though the factory sending unit doesn't have the same voltage range as some aftermarket or old electric gauges.

The reason its on the harness, most likely, is that's the factory setup. That sending unit does send information to the pcm, but the only reacting is the use of the Oil Pressure idiot light...on most vehicles. From what I understand, DOD/AFM vehicles can make use of the input from the op sensor.

Also, I've seen some posts about people getting custom xgauge commands to read the op PID, and have it pop up as readable on something like a scanguage. I'm looking to try one of these commands on my ScanguageII. So, in some cases, the sensor can be useful.

Re: A Few LS3 Crate Motor Questions

Gotcha! Makes sense now. I also noticed the mention of a bulkhead connector in the E-Rod LS3 instructions that has a pin for oil pressure output. Good reading: http://paceperformance.com/files/pdf/19244807E-ROD.pdf
