BBC timing question
I've got a .030 over 454 with 10:1 compression and a .615 lift cam.
What do I need as far as timing? I'm running 91 pump gas and I'm conserned about not hearing detonation. Currently have 18 initial 38 total, all in by 3000RPM.

Can not see why you would need more than 36 degrees total.

The big blocks I have run on the dyno all liked 34 degrees of timing the best. I would start there and see how it does.

I have 20 degrees initial and 16 in the distributor all in by 3000. I use an 850 carb and a Crane solid roller with .636 lift. Big block Chevy 489 cubic inches with Brodix heads. I also agree with 68TT. After all he has run some engines on a dyno and most of us have not. Running 20 degrees advance also solved my cooling problem. With 12 degrees advanced it ran 220 now it runs 180 all day long. I also run 10:1 compression.
