Vin Number help

Need a little help.
Looking at purchasing a 1966 C10 Stepside
The metal tag on the door reads:
chev. od
bid
c144 c66157
vin# 6Z17xxxx

Does any of this makes sense?
I know the c144 means 1/2 ton step-side
The rest?

Thank you for your time

Re: Vin Number help

if I understand correctly, the numbers 6Z17xxxx mean

6 for 1966
Z for assembled in Fremont (CA I believe)
17xxxx means the 7x,xxx unit built that year at that plant

on my truck the VIN looks like (using your #'s):

c1446Z17xxxx

the tag is on the cab door frame above the door, not the door

Re: Vin Number help

yes that is a 1/2 ton the 6 is 1966 the z is fremont assembly plant the rest of the number is the production number they all start with 1 then the rest is the number made at that plant . example 177193 would be the 77193 truck built at that plant that year . if you have the full number i can give you what month your truck was built in mike

Re: Vin Number help

I just looked at a 66 truck with vin C144 C-6-177 with a 6Z156681 and it is a stepside but I didn't think t you could decode the vin to the bed. IE is there really a way to tell if it was fleetside or stepside.

Re: Vin Number help

WHat does the one above decode as, also my longbed fleetside is a C1545Z and it is a 65 but I don't see how that decodes either, other than it is a 127" wheel base but what is the 45, in my book it doesn't jive.

C15=1/2 ton, 127 wb
4=stepside
5=1965
Z=Fremont

I have the same problem with my '66 Fleetside, which codes as a stepside
EDIT: I just checked my '65 Fleetside, which also codes as a stepside. so either I'm reading my assembly manual wrong or the manual is wrong.
or, both had the beds swapped at some point. I would guess that a factory mismatch would not have been unheard of

2nd EDIT: post #4 on this link makes more sense (from the links 1Bad62Pro/Steet supplied)

Re: Vin Number help

I have the build sheet for my longbed and the model number does decode to a fleetside on the build sheet but not the vin I guess.

Here is a pic of the vin tag on this truck I looked at, I have never seen one with the extra stamping, any ideals.

Re: Vin Number help

I passed on it after offering him 250, 250 was too much IMO, thanks anyways. I did read up on the DD though and date code makes sense.
