292 setup with a 5 speed?

So this past weekend I did a little research and came across a few things that have been in the pipeline. I finally located a 292 motor, which has been a pain. Nothing really locally, but I did find one that was pulled out of a running '70 C10 that was put to the side. I am going to take a look at this in 2 weeks.

The next thing is what is going to mate up with the 292. My 1949 Chevy is going to be a daily driver, however my goal has been to keep it an inline 6 with a 5 speed behind it.

After doing some more research I found a 2.2L 5 speed from an S10 and a NV3500 available also. I have been doing a little bit of reading and people were saying the S10 5 speeds are a bit weak if they aren't the "world edition" so it would be better to go with the NV3500.

Does anyone have any input/experience with this?

It depends on what you want to do with it. I have put S-10 5 speeds behind 350 v-8s & they work good. If you are going to do burn outs of speed shift or haul heavy loads I wouldn't recomend it. For normal driveing in an old pickup it will last from now on out. The 3500 is stouter but you have to go to a hydraulic clutch setup. I am not sure if they are available with mechanicl speedo drive. The S-10 trans. are cheap & plentiful & easy to swap. There is a world of info on this website & others on it.

Thanks Wrenchbender. Yeah, I am familiar I will have to go to a hydraulic clutch setup. There are a few more things I will have to fabricate, but unfortunately I have not found anyone who has documented a NV3500 swap with an AD truck thus the reason I was asking.

I know you found one but I have a 292 in Idaho that I probably won't use.

Beanyard, I really appreciate it. I have been looking for a 292 around NY for some time and only came across a handful. I definitely will keep it in mind and again thanks.
