is the 57-59 shifter different than earlier shifters? in which way?

bought a replacment 3 spd shifter and it seems to have a longer shaft than the one i have. My 58 did have the earier steering wheel so maybe the shifter was from a 56 too? Anyway, want to restore it back to 58 specs. Any info would be appreciated

58-9 has a shorter column and a dished wheel. The shift shaft is shorter and the shift handle is angled differently than 55-7.
