Re: Can anyone tell me what goes in all these holes?

Thanks Dave. I was told the prev. owner was going to install a dash push start button. Maybe it was going to be #1 hole? And #3 looks like a push pin hanging down. Forgot to post this one.
#6 ?

Re: Can anyone tell me what goes in all these holes?

#6 is for the choke. The #3 looks like a switch, could be for anything, I have seen a PTO cable mount where you have the #1 but that was typically on the larger trucks(1 ton and up). Hope this helps.

Re: Can anyone tell me what goes in all these holes?

My 50 Chev has a pull switch in #3 place too. It looks different but it turned on the dealer installed heater. I unhooked it when I went to a 12 volt system, I didn't want to smoke a good working heater. My truck gets parked in the winter so I don't need the heater anyway.

Not to be a smart*ss but have you looked at a complete dash picture? Those two big holes are where the dash clusters go. I can understand not knowing of the ones that get punched in there by somebody but come on(??????)

Re: Can anyone tell me what goes in all these holes?

Sorry to not know as much Coralhead. I have looked at other dash pictures, but I guess people do make their own holes and so they were different. I do know what the "Big" holes are for. I am a female, just learning about trucks and I want to be involed in the rebuild of my truck as much as I can. So far this board has been very friendly and helpful and not made me feel dumb asking obvious (to everyone else) questions.

Coralhead, did you even read her first post? She wasn't asking about the large holes. She circled the holes she was asking about.

Rudo, I do appologize for my comment. It seemed to me that with all the pictures on the web of dash boards that this could be figured out. I am sorry for my comment.

Yes Russell I read the post. I thought that pictures of a knob with a "T" and a "C" were obvious. I was being rude when I pointed out the obvious on the dash clusters. I am sorry for the sarcasm.

Re: Can anyone tell me what goes in all these holes?

Headlight switch.

Choke and throttle cable knobs. Not all trucks had the throttle cable though as this was usually on bigger trucks that might have a pto drive added.

Dealer installed heater switch with resistor. The push pull switch probably replaced one of these when it burned out.

This is the dash of my 51 Chev 1-1/2 ton which is pretty well untouched as far as add on items.

I think 5 operated the defroster door on the heater on a factory installed heater. The heater in the 1-1/2 ton has doors that you manually operate to direct air to the defrosters, a real pain when you are driving down the road and need defrosters.

Any other holes or switches would have been added by a previous owner for something they had on the truck.

Yes it is. The truck sat up at Patterson, Wa and belonged to a farmer for a number of years before I bought it. I still have no idea of what I'm going to do with it if someone doesn't come along and make an offer I can't refuse. What I'd like to do is put 70's /80's 1 ton running gear under it front and rear and make a ramp truck out of it.

Back to Rudoo's original question. Hole number 1 most likely was drilled to put a push button for a starter in at one time or another. A pretty common thing on these trucks when guys put later engines and starters in. Personally I'd put the push button where the throttle cable went originally and fill that hole. If you use a push button that is.

Rudoo, its ok to be a girl. Infact most of us guys like girls so we're glad to have ya.

But wether you buy parts form them or not pick up a free LMC Truck catalog or look at the free online catalog on their website. I always keep one around because they have great diagrams with all the parts labeled. For example in the current issue the diagram on page 66 has a full blow apart of the dash and shows alot of what your asking about. A copy might come in handy later.

Have fun with your project.

Re: Can anyone tell me what goes in all these holes?

Everyone of us had to start somewhere, there is no such thing as stupid questions. I have learned that when someone thinks that they know everything there is to know about something they are closed minded and can't see past their own knowledge. I have learned tons of stuff on here.

Re: Can anyone tell me what goes in all these holes?

Thanks again for everyones help. I did find a starter button in one of the "many" boxes I got with the truck. Still trying to decide if I want the button or go back to floor starter. I'll just keep on reading and asking questions :-)
