1962 gmc short fleet fuel tank

I want to remove the tank in the cab of my 1962 GMC. Would like to install a rear under the bed tank. Can I get some pictures and info on the tank used and a little info on the install.

I saw in another thread that a few people used a tank out of a mid 70's blazer. I asked for more info but got no response....I assume it would be a rear mount, how is the filler spout dealt with? My son has a 67' pontiac with a rear mount tank and a flip down license plate. Has anyone used something like that?

i cant remember who but someone here mounted a tank with the opening behind the plate. it looked prety cool.

My 63' LB Fleetside came with fuel doors in the outside bed wall. I would like to utilize if I could seeing how they are already there..There is nothing behind them. Was this stock for the truck or was this a kit added or something pulled from a later model and later abandoned. This is a 4x4 so would some mild off roading be too much stress on a side rail mounted tank?

Your truck apparently had aftermarket saddle tanks. This was a common addition in the '60's and '70's. I don't know if you could use the fuel tanks from a square body and be able to fill them thru your exisiting fuel filler doors. It might be worth a look.

I found out later today after I asked about the saddle tanks that my friend has another friend who is building a 65' to drag race. His 65' had saddle tanks and he is going to give them to me because he wont be using them. SCORE!!! Does the engine draw from both at once or is there a switch to choose which one is used? How does the fuel guage work on a dual set up?

I use to have an 85 Silverado with saddle tanks. it was controlled by a switch between the 2. not an expert on them though, not sure exactly how it all works.

On these older trucks with the dual saddle tanks, there was a brass manual selector switch typically mounted on the floor between the seat and door on the drivers side. As for the gauge, I'm not sure. I don't think the saddle tanks have sending units. If they did you could use a double throw switch to select between the two. Otherwise, just use the fuel in the saddle tanks first, and keep some fuel in your in cab tank as a reserve.

The main issue with the '60-'62's is the wider frame in the rear. I'm not sure if the front to back area is the same as on a '63-'66, but I would think so. You might have to move the rear crossmember, not positive. For a tank, you should be able to use the early Blazer tank the same as on the '63-'66's. You just might have to do some fab work to mount it. Another one that might work would be from a '64-'71 Van. Of course an ideal fit would be a tank from a '60-'62 Suburban or Panel, but finding one of those.......You might take a look at a '73+ Blazer tank. It might require a little more modification, but shouldn't be too bad.
