Cs144 or ad244. Have a cs144 in my Sub, and an ad244 in my S10 Blazer. I prefer the ad244. Got it used, and it's stronger and keeps the voltage up better when it's hot under the hood than the new(not reman)cs144. Very minimal mods were needed. Had to drill out one mounting hole to make it bigger and get a new plug. Also got a slightly bigger belt. Needed a .5" longer on the blazer, and a 1" longer on the Sub

The Police option for that truck was 105 amp. Should be direct fit.

I think that would be perfect. The stock alternator is a 78 amp 2 pin right?

Re: Best high amp alternator for 87 R10??

I got a 140 amp alternator for my BB C20 from a place online called National Quick Start (I think that was the name). I called before ordering and was told to ask for an adapter to fit the bigger alternator (just an electrical jack to convert the existing connector to the new one). I forget the lingo about the "frame size" and such, but this was a physically bigger alternator which just barely fit in the bracket - I think I had to tweak the bracket some, enlarging some holes etc., to get it to mount. It seems to have worked OK after several years so I guess it is a decent alternator. Since I bought that alternator I have adopted a new policy of buying only new OEM GM or AC Delco parts whenever possible, so I think I would go that route if I had it to do over again. I just went with a bigger alternator to help overcome "heat soak", which is a topic I don't want to light off again

Re: Best high amp alternator for 87 R10??

Thanks for the info! I am new to this too so I am not really sure what is enough or a worthwhile change I do know that right now, my lights flicker a good bit at idle and I am assuming this is the alternators inability to keep up with the load. And it is probably really old and worn out.

Re: Best high amp alternator for 87 R10??

It's not necessarily the alternator's fault. There could be a grouding issue with the lights trying to short out. You'll know when the alternator is going bad (TYPICALLY) you will hear it start to make a ticking noise. I high amp alternator is usually only necessary when using accessories such as a plow or a high output sterio. Otherwise it's not NECESSARY, but can remove a lot of the "stress" from the current alternator and allow for a longer life and more reliable/constant current

Re: Best high amp alternator for 87 R10??

That was one of the main reasons i wanted to upgrade. While it may not be a competition level high output stereo, i am planning on doing some upgrades to the sounds system and i wanted the larger alternator for the added support.
