What is the fastest you have driven in your truck?

I was over on the vette board and there is a guy questioning why his 78 Vette only tops out at 110mph. While some talk about gear ratio's, tire size, and horsepower, some other members are in absolute shock that anyone would drive a 78 corvette at such a "high" speed... The OP did it on an oval track I believe, so it wasn't like he was on a back road or a public highway.. Is 110mph really that big of a deal???!!! The people unhappy about it claim that the car was not built for it, and with the years of (assumed) wear, it could very well fall to pieces at such a "high" speed.... Personally, I have driven my 69 and 82 with all of their original components in excess of 100mph and wasn't worried about anything other than a speeding ticket!!!

So anyways, what's the fastest your truck has gone?! And were you scared for your life?!!!!! lol!

Re: What is the fastest you have driven in your truck?

Mph in the sig. Thats the fastest it's been. I have gotten over going much over the speed limit on public roads these days.

Once upon a time, I did do 148mph on a deserted public freeway at 2:30ish am. But that was about 12 years ago. The one car on the road that was almost 2 miles in front of me is what slowed me down. I was probably doing 2x their speed and c ame up on them very fast.

I also have done over 150 on a street bike, never again.

It sucks that many tracks are closing down, but they need our support, I will keep it there.

I am not one for driving like a maniac either... Would have to be a VERY quiet night if I were to go test out a top speed on a public roadway... There is simply too much to lose if you get caught... My thrill is getting to the speed limit as fast as friggin possible!

Nicely said,, couldn't agree more Shaun.

Around 114-115 seems to be normal for my pile of parts. Actually 115 in that brick can be more exciting than 145 in the Nova. These things were never intended for this.

I run right at a 100 in the 1/4 still pulling hard in 3rd,once it gets over 105 I usually chicken out, as you get older you get smarter, dont think it would bother me as much in a vette tho.always wondered what the HP would say if he clocked me over 100 in a 56 chevy pickup haha.

Re: What is the fastest you have driven in your truck?

I wasn't in a truck but I did get thrown out of a car rolling @ 105. Yeah.... wouldn't recommend that to anyone... Almost took 3 years to heal, lost my left leg above the knee. Ahh..... to be 20 and retarded again......

High speed is better done on a closed course. With a cage, helmet, and a 5 point. Not 5 am, pissed up, with a blond chick driving beyond their abilities.

Re: What is the fastest you have driven in your truck?

i remember when i was a kid i had a 400 sb with a stall speed coverter/th350 in my 71 c-10 circa 1990. i was following a retired couple on a state road doing maybe 40 mph. way to slow for a speed seeker kid like me. before i could pass them a f150 4x4 ford came up behind me. he wanted past both of us. about the time there was no cars coming the other way and it was safe to pass, i started to pull out to pass and the next thing i know this ford is almost loaded in my bed. i proceded to "let er all hang out". laid gas pedal to the floor and i really started putting distance between us.i could tell he was trying to keep up but coulnt. the main reason i remember this story was a went past a fellow doing yard work in his yard and he was motioning for me to slow down. i looked down at speedo and was doing between 100 and 105 mph. i backed off and the ford caught up. he followed me till i turned off on another road. some things that you remember huh.

Re: What is the fastest you have driven in your truck?

I drove my dads 71 vette 138mph. That was too fast. I've ridden in a 73 Challenger doing 120mph and it was 10 times scarier than the vette.

In the truck? Probably 85-90; A 305 CAN AND WILL MOVE irregardless of what anyone says if set up right. (was late for appointment) Engine had more, but did not want to push it due to traffic and other possible consequences.

Fastest in car? 136 Mercedes 190E 2.3 16 valve (was stupid)

Re: What is the fastest you have driven in your truck?

Just over a hundred in the 1/4 mile with my old set-up in the Big 10. Never on the street though.

Drag racing is a blast but its over so quickly, now I'm kind of interested in something that lasts longer like the Sand Hills Open Road Race or maybe the Maxton Mile.

Would always shock me to see the exhaust glowing clear back to mufflers...
Then for pure stupidness try and make the rotors and headers the same color red.. :/

I've had the 73 up to about 100mph and it scared the hell out of me. Felt like being in a space shuttle taking off.

115 screaming with TH350 and 3.73's. Should have seen the look on the guy driving the charger next to me when the old truck broke 80mph and kept rollin. (stupid!) but the grin I had for the next two days was great.

Re: What is the fastest you have driven in your truck?

Motorcycle...had my '81 Honda 650 up to about 90-95mph when I was younger and was just too uncomfortable to go any faster.

Been 100-110mph in a '77 GMC truck years ago, maybe 100mph in this truck after I rebuilt it... and its an experience! These bricks just don't do too well over 85-90mph or so.

As far as a '78 Vette...I had a '78 Camaro with a "tuned/rejetted" 305-2V/turbo350/2.56 or 2.73 gears and ran it up 5mph or so past the 130mph speedo's limit one night in '79 or '80. Can't imagine a Vette doing less?

I grew up in the country tho and was driving at 13yrs old.....where odds were the only people we were going to hurt were ourselves. Different now days tho...way too much traffic makes those hyper runs just too dangerous.

Re: What is the fastest you have driven in your truck?

Everyone I mention this to says everyone doing less than 100mph must be city folk.. LOL. Myself, I grew up on a farm in Saskatchewan, Canada... Heck, I remember riding in a 93 Beretta @ 118mph, a 91 chevy truck with the speedo wrapped to 60km/h, and a 85 cutlass supreme @ 115mph... It's just what we did I guess! Was I ever scared, sure, but mostly because it wasn't me behind the wheel...

Re: What is the fastest you have driven in your truck?

130 mph in the 1/8 mile. Around 110 on the street when my truck was completely stock springs, shocks, steering, etc. It was floating a lot on the street. Those days are over since I started racing. I have a safety complex now! That's what happens once you go that fast with all the proper safety gear, it puts things into perspective. Paul

The luv goes through @ 130 on a 100 shot .

In the past :68 427 4 sp vette 2.73 gear 147 = weekend in jail ( i was the passenger )

72 challenger 440 130 ish ( he said 145 ) very scary ride . car was drifting around covering 3 lanes

Re: What is the fastest you have driven in your truck?

Ok.

The job I use to have I ran speeds between 100-140 nightly.
Middle 90's Camaro 140's
Toyota Supra Turbo 140's
Old pickup use to have 125-130.
68 Chevelle 130's BBC
71 Chevrolet PU in the 80's so far.

I rarely ever get over 80 now. But still comfortable driving at high speed in the open flats when it is not a risk to others.

Re: What is the fastest you have driven in your truck?

I haven't driven my '71 much yet except around town but I've only ever done 85 mph in the '84 with a 383/th350 driving between Texas and Arizona where the limit is 80 mph on I-10. It had plenty more but I don't like to press the speed limit too much.

I used to be a test driver for VW at the Arizona Proving Grounds. The fastest I went in a car was there in an Audi R8 when they were still prototypes at 150 mph continuous for 5 minutes at a time on a closed oval. It was scary at first but then you get used to the cars feel and it wasn't so bad. Still never let my hands off of 10 and 2 on the wheel though!

I still run my bike every once in awhile at the track, road course (nothing like scraping knee), full leathers. The fastest I went on it was 173 mph on a long straight. It's an '09 Kawi ZX10R. I was focused on the road and when I let off to look down at the speedo, it was at 173. When you slow down from that fast, 100 feels like you can jump off and run next to the bike almost. When I picked my torso up off the tank, the wind caught me and pushed me up in the upright position, felt scary! The track I go to now doesn't have such a long straight.
