finding gear ratio

i have looked every where and i just picked up this truck and the rear pumpking is knocking bad so im trying to figure out the gearing of this to just get a new axle...the sticker in the glove box is gone so i cant look on there any one know how to tell the gearing using the vin...thanks in advance

You could take the cover and count the teeth. Also the ring gear should be stamped.

Nope. There's no coding in the VIN that indicates gear ratio.

As bilfman says, you can pull the cover and count teeth (sounds like you need to be in there anyway) or do the old "roll the tire and count driveshaft revolutions" trick.

If you can give me more details on your truck (year, model, engine, trans) I can tell you what ratios were offered - but there's no way to know what the original owner/dealer chose and no guarantee that it's still in there.

Slight modification to my above post.

Depending on the model year ('77 and newer) you CAN send your VIN (and $50) to the GM Heritage Center and they can pull the original invoice for your truck. It will show all of the options, pricing, destination charges, etc.

It will look like this:

Lift the rear and count how many times the driveshaft rotates in the time the tire rotates once......... that will give you a very good answer to what gear ratio you have.

i know what gear ratios were offered ill just take it apart and count the teath this sunday...thanks a lot guys ...ill be posting on here more often i just bought a 84 chevy half ton for 550 and already got a 4 inch lift for 125 and im gettting 35 inch super swampers on sat for 140 and ima do a 4 inch shackle lift it has a 305 which im going to upgrade to a 350 in feb(income taxs again) its gonna be an awesome mudder

Their site says "excludes fleet and import vehicles". I guess my airforce truck wouldn't show up huh?

Sounds like it. You might still ask, in case there's an opportunity it was an individual (single) order for the Air Force, vs a "batch build".

The other opportunity would be if it was built in Oshawa, as GM of Canada keeps their own records and makes them available.

You don't even have to count teeth,pull cover and there are some numbers stamped on ring gear.They will be something like a 41 and 10 or similar.the large number is ring gear teeth,small is pinion teeth.divide ring by pinion and that will give you ratio.
