Re: copper exhaust for a gas engine?
You know it sounds real cool but I work with copper gas lines all the time and they won't hold up to heat, it will get real hard and crack and the coating will burn off (won't take heat either) and turn green but you know maybe, just maybe run copper tailpipes, not as much heat back there, who actually looks under anyway, most just see the tailpipes.

Re: copper exhaust for a gas engine?
i think copper tubes for the radiator hoses and heater lines would be cool. witha bit of rubber at ehch end of coarse. that would let you still use the copper and keep it safe from heat, it would also help cool the water down too

Re: copper exhaust for a gas engine?
I also work with copper on an every day basis (union Steamfitter). We use copper for a lot and the vibration doesn't matter as much as you may think. ( in response to every one saying it'll crack) brazing is good up to around 800 degrees i believe. solder around 550. and copper when heated does not get hard it softens. you could use type "M" copper which would lessen the weight being it has a thin wall. "L" being middle ground and "K" being thick wall.
As for the Clear coat issue, there is a lacquer that we have used, i have no idea the name but was good on hot water pipe around 160-180 degrees. just food for thought. Personally i'd like to do it just cause every one says you can't. |

Re: copper exhaust for a gas engine?
Let it tarnish and you'll have a green exhaust system. The statue of liberty is made out of copper, and she's solid green. The tarnish will protect it though, the natural phenomena of copper.
I wouldn't do it, but that's me. Each to their own. I remember as a kid, one day I came home to find my dad had cut up our swing set and was using the pipes to build an exhaust system for his truck. Had the torch out and was using coat hanger for filler. He had the only exhaust system I've ever seen with clowns painted on it.
