64 bed problem

Hey guys,
New here, but have been building my 64 for a long time. I am almost done with a frame off restoration. I have hit a few snags during reassembly.

I have a 1964 short bed fleetside. Here is my issue. I bought a fleetside short bed from a 1962 0r 63 and I painted it etc. Now when I go to test fit the bed, the mounting pads dont line up with the 64 frame. I can drill out the spot welds and try to modify the pad locations?

Or am I better to buy new cross sills?

Are the holes in the front of the bed going to line up with the wood for a 64?
I need to figure out a plan to remedy this situation.

Thanks for any help.

Re: 64 bed problem

You most have gotten a 62 bed. The frames are different for 60-62 and 63-66. As are the mounting location, I would just leave them alone if they line up on the frame rails and drill new holes. The cross sills are also different from 60-62 63-66.

Re: 64 bed problem

They dont hit the frame in the right spots. So I guess I will drill out the spot welds and move them.

Any pictures of the correct mounting? I can figure out the pads. But how does the rear frame mount sit? Does the hole line up with the frame?

I took this truck apart 20 years ago.. lol I am having trouble remembering how it goes together.

Re: 64 bed problem

I am doing the same as you right now on my 64. The bed I have is from a 62 stepside. The 60-62 has a wider frame than the 64. I replaced the rear cross sill with a new one for a 64 and now the rear lines up right. As for the other sills, the front I used, but removed the 3/4 inch mounting tabs and moved them inward a couple of inches. It is better to just drill them out and mig tack them back on. The other 2 center cross sills are done the same. The center reenforcement braces are the same for all years and left alone. If you were closer, I have a 64 swb fleetside I'd sell ya.

Re: 64 bed problem

So how do the rear mounts attach to the frame? Do they go on top or slide inside? Will I have to drill all new holes for the stainless bed wood strips?

Sorry for the all the questions. I just want to have a plan.

I drilled out all the spot welds on the mounting pads on the cross members and removed the rear sill mounts as well. I have them all free. Just trying to figure out how to modify the sills to make the bed wood kit for a 64 and the mounts work and look clean etc..

Re: 64 bed problem

The rear cross sill mounts on top of the frame. On my new rear sill the holes for the wood are the same as for the 62. So if you plan to just move all the tabs and mounts you will be ok. The difference will be the bolts going though the wood all the way to the frame. The 62 wood will have wider mount holes. So, If you order 64 wood you will be ok. There are also a thin rubber pad that goes between the bed mounts and the frame. I hope all that makes sense
