Gearbox leaking tranny fluid?
My gearbox is now leaking where it mounts to the frame, looks like tranny fluid. Never leaked here before I changed ps pump and line. What could be the cause of this? This is so confusing.
As always thanks for any help/advice with this issue. 84 swb 305 Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Gearbox leaking tranny fluid?
Only a couple places it could leak. Sector shaft (where the pitman arm connects), control valve (where the steering shaft connects) or the pressure line or return line. My guess would possibly be that the new pump you installed has higher pressure than the old one did due to being worn out and has caused a leak....
Some folks use trans fluid in the p/s system which would explain why it looks like it.... |

Re: Gearbox leaking tranny fluid?
No chances r its just a cheap chinease flange that miss mated from the lines to box. Clean it and find where the leak is comming from. Always replace these parts when last option. These trucks were the last quality years from chevy. When remanned with over seas parts,, even from a quality builder like napa, NEVER last as long or well as oem.
Find out where leak is comming from, until then no one can help u Posted via Mobile Device |

How close is the tie rod suppose to touch the gearbox, mine is gapped a good inch and a half. And the ridges seem striped around the tie rod. Any idea how to fix this? Thanks. Posted via Mobile Device |

The pitman arm will rise on the shaft until it stopps, the splined shaft it sits on is gradually larger, like a cone, if its stripped the nut was not tight enough and ran loose, this is a saftey concern. I reccomend you go to the local junkyard and get a replacement. A new box will b about 200 and if u combine ur parts list with time and difficulty, not worth it to replace. A napa reman unit will b aprox 200plus tax, junkyard 40 otd. Hope this helps. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Gearbox leaking tranny fluid?
^it helps a lot, thanks for taking the time to share your insight. I'll probably hit the salvage yard for this, as I'm on a budget for this truck.
