87 4x4 Gauge Issues

I've got an 87 4x4. Factory gauges and stock tach(maybe not stock to the truck) Anyway i had swapped the truck for a Vette. I had the Vette a good few months then got bored and traded back for my truck again. lol Anyway the guy who had my truck for a while did some upgrades, including a tilt column. Ever since the column swap it seems the gauges are off. All the gauges worked proviously and now the temp gauge is pinned way past overheated and the fuel gauge is off as well as the rest. Other than the speedo and tach. Is there something involved with changing the column that would cause all the gauges to go whacky? Feel free to ask some questions if you need more info. I'm at a loss as far as where to start. Thanks in advance!!!

Re: 87 4x4 Gauge Issues

Ground cluster behind the dash?

Pinned Temp means the Temp sender wire is shorted to ground.

What are the other gauges doing?

The other ones are just all off. The fuel gauge always worked before and now it seems to have no rhyme or reason as to how it works. The other two dont really move a whole lot. Would anything to do with him changing the column, maybe ignition wiring or anything along those lines have messed the gauges up. They always worked before he had the truck and now theyre messed up. I believe as far as the interior goes all he changed was the column.

Re: 87 4x4 Gauge Issues

The first thing I'd check is the grounds including the splice in the harness. Make sure volts are reaching the gauges. Chase the sender wires with a multimeter.

Replacing the column disturbs the wiring. It's a 27 year old rig.

The temp wire is shorted. Did wires get pinched when he put in the column?
