How are you guys tackling accesories? (Factory air/PS 72')

Here I am with more questions (that tend to have expensive answers).

How are you guys dealing with components?

My plan is to take a complete 5.3 along with all accessories - Alt, PS pump, AC compressor and install it with the factory equipment as best as possible.

It seems like no one is having issues with the brackets/accessories clearing, so thats a good start.


My 72' is a factory air, factory P/S. Is there any faq or write up regarding connecting the new compressor from the 5.3 into the existing air setup? I pulled my evaporator/condenser a while ago along with the compressor but I still have all of the parts. Can these parts even be reused with the modern compressor, or do I need new stuff? Im sure the connections are different sizes/locations. Who should I talk to?

As for the P/S, same question. Do I just have a hose/hydraulic shop press new fittings and connect the pump to the steering box?

I converted my alternator to 1 wire a while back - I'm hoping this will be a straight plug and play.

cant say as for a/c....but for ps just slip this in the pressure side of the pump and connect your hose.

Or, with a 1" wrench, remove the fitting from the back of your old ps pump and install in the 5.3 pump. It's the same style pump, just with a different reservoir. Cost: free.

You can run the factory Denso compressor. Or run a Sanden compressor....http://www.alangrovecomponents.com/LS.htm.
Adapter blocks seem to be hard to find for the Denso lately??

The factory evaporator used a expansion valve/POA valve, To make this work well...You need a NOS/Delco POA valve & R-12.
To use 134a you need to delete the POA valve, Kits available.

I retrofit later Orifice tube/Accumulator evaporator cores in these trucks....77 Olds 98 evaporator cores fit in 69-72 cases.

A Vintage Air A/C/heat kit With a Sanden compressor works really good.

Thanks for the tips!

Thats great news on the PS pump.

As for the AC, I have the complete R12 setup but it would be nice to run the much easier to find 134a.

Will the factory compressor fitting connect to the Denso compressor?

I've made a few calls around town but no one seems to know anything about these older AC systems.


I assume the alternator is a non-issue, also?

Alt should be computer controlled. You will need to hook up your charging cable to the battery. A/C could be as simple as having new hoses made-- people have had varying success with the variable displacement compressors.
