Power steering in a 57 Napco 4x4
Does anybody know if there is a kit or a way to install power steering in my 57 Chevy Napco truck? I do not know if there were any kits out there. Thanks

Re: Power steering in a 57 Napco 4x4
I called them earlier and they said it would not work in a 4WD. They even got a little bit upset when I asked them the difference between the two, said they don't know but that it will not work. I was wondering if anybody has put power steering on a Napco truck and if there was a difference in the pitman arm in a 2 wheel drive truck and a 4 wheel drive truck.

Thats just it, they don't know. But i know you could make it work. All you really need is the pitman arm. The box is easy to get from the parts store.

Re: Power steering in a 57 Napco 4x4
from what i read on napco 4x4 conversions the use the stock stearing box the just changed the pitman arm. like bad 4x4 said you can make it work. if they don't know how can they tell you that it won't work. if you had toyota stearing box and your old pitman arm than a good local auto parts store should be able to help you find a pitman arm that will work. an by local auto parts store i don't mean auto zone, advanced auto and pep boys. you want to find a mom and pop store those are the ones that will probably be able and willing to help you. i only say that because those big auto chain stores if it's not in the computer they can't help you. most of the people that work at those places don't know jack s@$t about cars. i have had experence in this area with these stores. good luck hope you can make it work and if you do, remember pass it on to others.

Re: Power steering in a 57 Napco 4x4
Some of the bigger napco trucks had factory power steering. I know a guy that bought a set up from someone in Cali. and the pitman arm is different. I do not know how but could possibly get some pictures sent to me to post here. He is a very bust cabinet maker but is putting together parts to build one nice rig. I have seen pws on 1.5 ton napco rigs but never on a half ton but that doesn't meen they didn't do it.
I hope this helps. Bryan |

Re: Power steering in a 57 Napco 4x4
I talked to Cpp about that kit about a week ago and they said it will not work on A Napco because it has a different pitman arm. They were not too helpful and said every kit that they had sold for a Npaco had gotten returned. Maybe I should bring my truck down there so they can get a kit that works for a Napco.

Re: Power steering in a 57 Napco 4x4
for the 2wd conversion they the pre-85' toyota box,the style used on the 4x4's that had a DIFFERENTAL instead of INDEPENDANT front suspension. in the near future i will be trying to figure out this conversion as i'm getting ready to buy a 56' napco 4x4.

Re: Power steering in a 57 Napco 4x4
one thing that might be helpful infiguring it out on a stock napco truck
would be to look at using the steering knuckles off an early Jeep full size pickup If I remember right they used a use a closed knuckle Dana front axel similar to what the Napco trucks used Except that they had steering arms on top for crossover type steering and used a box similar to ones found on chevy cars put a power steering box off a car on it and would work and look fairly clean Gene Sharp |
