Wrong key stuck in ignition

So we're out of town and my oldest son texts my wife..."I had to use dad's truck to jump off my car, but now the key won't come out. I found the spare, but it's stuck"

Me to my wife.."I don't have a spare set"

Apparently he found some misc keys on a ring and went to put them in. Well, he got it to turn crank so he could jump his car.

It's the "round" key which looks like it went to a door.

Problem is now, that sucker won't budge. I put a good amount of force on it and the cylider started to pull out some so I figured the best thing to do was stop and ask ya'll.

Any advice?

Re: Wrong key stuck in ignition

The only way it got in there was to force it in so my guess is the only way to get it out is to force it the other way

Wow, maybe lots of something slippery in the lock? No real silver bullet to that one.

Re: Wrong key stuck in ignition

Spray some WD40 or something in there and then gently wiggle it around until it comes out.

Re: Wrong key stuck in ignition

I'll give it another go with something to help slide it out. May have to end up removing and replacing.

Yeah, I'm sure it didn't go in there easy. Just hoping it comes out easy.

Yeah pulling hard might get it out but your probably gonna have to replace the key switch either way tho.

Re: Wrong key stuck in ignition

My guess is the reason the wrong key worked is the cylinder is worn out. Now the tumblers are bound up and its not going to come out with out some damage.

Re: Wrong key stuck in ignition

So I'm thinking I'm just going to change the whole cylinder out. Should be pretty simple, remove steering wheel, remove retaining bolt, and there it is.

AZ has them for $14.

Any tricks I should know about?

Re: Wrong key stuck in ignition

There are some threads on pulling steering wheels.

You'll need a puller, a steering wheel lock ring removal tool, and then just some screw drivers (phillips, torx) to get down to the cylinder.

Be carefull removing the clip and spring beside the two torx scres you'll have to remove to get the cylinder out....at least remember how the spring sits on the yellow plastic do-dad so you can put it back together the right way.

Re: Wrong key stuck in ignition

Thanks for all the help fellas. Had it all put back together and while I was attaching the steering wheel, the signal cancel cam snapped. So apart she all came again, replaced that, and finally got it back.

Wasn't a hard job, just tedious. However, the 2nd and 3rd time was a snap
