Seat belt dye

I picked up a set of brown GM seat belts from a fellow board member. I currently have tan belts in my 79, but i'm changing the interior to brown...and the brown belts i got are in better condition. However, they are faded in some of the common spots, so i'm going to dye them entirely.

I'm going to use RIT dye, and i'd just like to know if anyone here has experience doing it with RIT dye ? And what method did you use ? I'm thinking of doing the stove top method listed on the RIT website. I've read through the previous threads on this topic, but no one has really mentioned the specific method they used. Any info would be appreciated. Thanks.

Re: Seat belt dye

I would use the rit dye on the stove. If the plastic covers are faded it will redye them too. It even works for changing the color in the seatbelt plastics.

Re: Seat belt dye

Thanks for the info, 1774btcrew...the stove is what i was thinking as well. However, i didn't think it would also work on the plastic covers...thought i was going to have to spray them...so this is good to hear. The belts are the deluxe belts, so they have metal buckles. The metal is safe from the dye right ? Cause i'd hate to have the metal buckles end up with a brown tint.

Re: Seat belt dye

It won't hurt the metal. I have used it on vintage plastic bike seats with chrome seat rails with no issues. Good luck! Take some before and after pictures for us!

Re: Seat belt dye

so what does work then? I need to change mine to black, since they never made them for crewcabs.

Re: Seat belt dye

If Rit does work, how do you get the color right? Black is easy, but I guess you can't restore to original when re-dying?

Re: Seat belt dye

Ive said this in a few other threads but why not just replace the webbing? This is what I plan on doing, I'll just take them down to an upholstery shop to have them sew it up with the new stuff.

Re: Seat belt dye

Check our FAQ forum. There is a well written article on the subject.

Re: Seat belt dye

Rit dye will work on the softer flexible plastic just fine. I have done it a ton of times!
