Re: fuel only reads e on both sides

There are 2 valve systems in the 73-91 trucks.
What year is your truck?

Reading E means the sender wire is shorted to ground somewhere. I can get more specific once I know what year your rig is.

1984 305/700r4/np208 new sending units had the new grounds attached into holes i chased with a tap beforehand. They appear to have seated good. Before i didnt have the tanks sending units actually wired up but now they are and it reads empty or actually 1/8 tank but they both are full dont ask how much 40 gallons cost geezzzz wow

Re: fuel only reads e on both sides

Roughly $160 to fill it at my prices... OWCH!!

When you unplug the selector valve plug does the gauge go to roughly 3:00? If it doesn't move then I'd suspect the gauge or flexible printed instrument cluster circuit panel.

The 84 sender wire runs from the selector valve through the main bulkhead plug on the firewall and from there to the instrument cluster plug. Check it over for shorts to ground.

Nope that's the first generation single wire tank valve. 73-8?
I don't have 81 & 82 wiring diagrams so I'm not sure which year GM changed the valve from Solenoid to Motorized. '83-91 has a motorized valve.

The '84 should have a motorized valve system with a 6 position weatherpak plug. The gauge switch is incorporated into the valve.
