Re: Rattle Can dash?
I would take off everything that will un-bolt , was everything down real well before you sand to get rid of any oils (I like to use dawn dish soap) .
Then sand everything down really well as you don't want anything shining when done (as in no shine to the paint anymore) then use a tack rag to remove all the dust. Then prime with 2 light coats then once that's dry paint with a few light coats of color makeing sure you keep the covarge even so you end up with no streaks (overlap you last pass with your next pass) and make sure you don't put in on thick, you don't want it to look dry but not to wet as you lay the paint down so it does not run as a big run will suck. Iam no painter but that has work for me in the past. Posted via Mobile Device |

Re: Rattle Can dash?
I've rattle canned almost my entire truck (but I'm really just doing it to protect the surface till I can do a real paint job). Mine has done best where I've taken it down to bare metal, but two coats of primer, a light sand (320 grit) and then 2-4 coats of top coat over it.

The more you take apart, the better the overall quality will be in my opinion.
As far as prep work goes I would scuff any surface you plan on painting with a red scotch brite pad and then spray on brake clean and wipe it down. It's not the absolute best way to do it but I used the same prep method before doing my interior and it has lasted over two years. |

Pactice on scrap metal first, before trying to redo your dash.

Re: Rattle Can dash?
you mention the rattle can, so heres a story, i switched the column in my truck, went to a paintshop, they mixed up some paint from the SPID codes in my glovebox, which was awesome, put the paint in a rattle can, i painted the column, and you can't even tell it didn't come that way. Probably the most expensive can of paint i've bought, but i was impressed.

Re: Rattle Can dash?
Careful with cleaners however and make sure you get any of the cleaner residue off or else your paint will start to bubble an such. dont spray too thick like 69GWC said. Use a primer to be able to fill scratches and use very fine grit sandpaper to make it smoother than a babys bum.
Then spray with even coats starting on the edges first ( cause they can be the most difficult ) and just fill everything else in. Oh and make sure you use quality paint, ive gotten away with using walmart paint with some pretty decent results but when i get dollar store paint it doesnt seem to work as well. Duplicolor is probroly one of the best spray paint cans you can get. Nice even spray pattern and you get a decent amount in the can. Follow all of these steps and soon you can tackle a job like painting your truck. I did mine and with all that i learned from using spraypaint i got the skill down and had no runs, orange peel or tiger stripes. J8ust keep practicing and you will get the hang of it ![]()

Re: Rattle Can dash?
I use Krylon Dual satin black quite a lot. It is a paint and primer in one. It covers thick and you only need two coats usually. It has a nice fan spray pattern and holds up very well. I actually painted my entire 78 c10 with that stuff a while back and a year later its still good.
I dont know about that x-metal paint. Im not a fan of fake chrome looking paints. Might look ok on some braided hose fittings or smaller stuff like nuts and bolts but thats about as far as I would take it.

I like to use steel wool and paint thinner. It needs to be as clean as possible.I did mine 10 years ago and it's starting to need a redo.
