Center steering link for 34" frame
Hi Y'all,
I am looking to find what Chevy truck has 34" nominal frame (front)??? That will lead me to the correct center steering link I need. First, my truck is a full custom frame, 34" wide, (way-off-the-page). Frame rails are from a 1980 C-50 (C5000) with Leaf springs & I beam cut out. Now I mix and match steering components. Sectioned in, is a IFS suspension from a '87 C-30 cubevan dually (34" frame). Removed Saginaw power steering box (vertical with 2 U-joints), swing down, van design, (see first picture). This suspension has the center steering link with pitman/idler arms and tie rod end (holes) on the same plane (fore/aft). (second picture) Replaced with a Saginaw power steering box that lays over on angle to align with steering column. (This steering came from a '88 Suburban C-20) See third picture. Axle spindle and discs also now come the '88 Suburban too (8-bolt). This steering uses a center link where pitman/idler (holes) and tie rod end (holes) are 90 degrees from each other (fourth picture). Now, Chevy trucks (60's-70's-80's?) with IFS come in wide and narrow front frames (34" wide and 28"-29"). {Pick-ups/Suburbans/Vans, etc] NOW THE QUESTION: What year Chevy P/U trucks have a 34" wide frame (measured at the front)???? That year truck (P/U-Suburban) should yield a center link that has the Pitman/Idler (holes) and tie rod (holes) at 90 degrees to each other. Then I can go about finding one to bolt-in. Fall back position: Cut/splice/weld center link to lenthen it about 5". This is least desirable for safety reasons on highway. The rear suspension swapping Dana full float axles and springs is easy. Just cut, grind and fit new hangers etc. No steering geometry to retain. Thanx in advance for any leads for wide 34" (front) frame Chevy trucks. -Rick |
