1966 chevy truck engine swap to LS1

I've working on my engine swap for about a year, slowly getting all my parts together before removeing the engine. For the past couple of months I have been really getting some goals accomplished. I've installed 2001 Corvette LS1, left the oil pan (BAT WING) installed. It fit great, like it was built for the truck! I have a 700R4 behind that with posi 411 gears. I'm working on the wiring and air conditioning. The ESM is under the dash next to the (OLD Air Product) AC unit. I have new wiring harness from America Autowire includes accessory wiring. Here are some pictures.

Re: 1966 chevy truck engine swap to LS1

Looks great! I was looking into putting an LS motor in my truck in the future. Do they bolt right up to all old style transmissions like th-350,400,t-5 etc. ? Or do you need an adapter plate?

thanks

Re: 1966 chevy truck engine swap to LS1

Yes, for the C5 LS1 (years 1999-2004) they bolt right up using a 700R4, 350 or 400, different fly wheel. If you get a newer motor you might want to use the transmission that comes with that year or an adaptor plate could be used, more reseach required. For some reason, the LS1 motor is and about 2 inches shorter that the original motor. Using the same bolt pattern on the frame for engine mounts. The transmission mount had to be redrilled and was moved on the frame, the drive line had to be lengthened also.

Looks fantastic!

I will take the old exhaust manifolds off your hands. Mine crumbled.

You made it look so easy! Wow, what a clean install - and I was excited about how you freshened up the engine compartment alone, then saw the LS in there! Looks VERY nice. Would love to see the whole truck!

Re: 1966 chevy truck engine swap to LS1

Very nice! I like your color choice on the inner fenders and the engine. The engine looks great, and the installation looks factory.

I'll be watching this thread, as I am very interested in putting an LS motor in one of my future projects.

Can you describe what you did for motor mounts?

[QUOTE=davidb1;5749356]That looks great!

The Truck Shop "truckandcarshop.com" in Orange cal. Has a tubular set, that bolt to the same holes in the frame. You can choose to mount in forward or in the stock location. Either way you are going to have to deal with lengthening the drive shaft. I had to shave a little on the side weld was to big for the motor mount. I called to report it issue to the company. Who knows if it will go anywhere. They were power coated and I sealed the grind it with some Black POR15.
If you have a V8 you can use your same set, but I wanted to upgrade to the newer style motor mount.

Re: 1966 chevy truck engine swap to LS1

1966Chevy, thanks so much for the info and link!

I've been running my 305 V6 in my '64 waiting, stalling and procrastinating putting an extra LS2 in it for fear of dealing with the motor mounts.

Thanks again!

Re: 1966 chevy truck engine swap to LS1

Here are some more pictures of progress of my truck. I've been working on getting the wiring completed, gauges working. The computer is running all the original requested sensors and I’m running the original gauge sensors as well for the stock gauges. I swapped out the AMP gauge to Voltmeter from a 1980 Chevy truck. The clock is from a 73 Volvo already was quartz. I painted the face and add the Chevy bow tie. I also added AC, 'Old Air product' they have a stock looking of the controls, electronic. Check out the AC button, very inconspicuous. My computer is mounted the fire wall above the AC box, very tight. I had to shorten the Glove box, it only about 4 inched deep.
