60-61 hood question
On a 60 chevy hood the inserts where the signal lights go are removeable aren't they?
Will the inserts off a 61 chevy hood fit in the 60 hood holes? This might be a GMC good, I don't know yet as I haven't seen it but the same question would apply. The guy says there is a solid screen inside the "bubble" with the signal lights but he says they are not removeable. Thanks

Re: 60-61 hood question
It sounds like he is describing a 60-61 GMC hood. The front of the hood is all welded into one piece and is not removable without surgery. To answer your other question is - yes the 60-61 inserts will interchange. The 60-61 Chevy hood is the same except for the inserts and the center emblem/ornament.
This is what an early GMC hood looks like:

Re: 60-61 hood question
Thanks for the quick reply.
That is one ugly hood. But I guess I get what I get when I ask someone to do me a favor. Looks like I am still searching for a 61 Chevy hood.

Re: 60-61 hood question
Just for reference, here is a 60 Chevy hood. As you can see the inserts are gone. they are in a box in the garage. Definitely removable

Re: 60-61 hood question
OKAY guys, now the million dollar question?
I found out today that this IS a 1960 GMC hood and it was taken off a school bus. Will it fit a 64 1/2 ton chevrolet with out any problems or will there be "issues" that need to be addressed?

School buses are many times the best source of hoods because they are rarely abused and are so high in the air they are frequently rust free.

Re: 60-61 hood question
Thanks again Mark.
This one didn't the abuse but it is rust free. My brother bought it before he asked me. Personally I would have passed on it. It does have the latch and he did not get the pin assembly but I know where one of those are. Thanks again for the info. When I get it unloaded I'll post a picture of something attached to the back side of the hood that I want to know what it is since on my 64 it wasn't there. Probably do that tomorrow.

Re: 60-61 hood question
It would be a little bit of work, -welding/cutting, but if the gmc hood is in very good shape, you can change out the front lower portion, with that from a chevy. lots of spot welds. BUT you might be able to find a chev hood with a decent front lower piece, and switch it out.
personally the early gmc hood has grown on me , and I will be using one on my sub., probably with a 63 grille. check out my hood/grille combo thread for some of the different looks that you can get with a gmc hood

Re: 60-61 hood question
As hard as it is to find a 60-61 hood in any condition I just couldn't bring myself to chop one up.
These things are hard to find. Once I get this one cleaned up and the dents taken out of it I might like it more than I do now. It's a wait and see kind of thing.

Re: 60-61 hood question
How is the 1960 C60 factory latch mechanism different than 1962 to 1966 C10-30? just the bolt length???
I'm considering a C60 early hood front section graft for a too far gone 66 C10 hood. Not exactly sure what I'm getting into yet... but if it looks anything like what I think it will - it would be very cool. Merry Christmas! |

Truth be told, mine is really a '62, but with the hood, it's just easier to tell everyone it's a '61. I like the Chevy emblems in the pods, but I like the '60 grill better. I've got a straight, solid painted '60 grill in it now, and an excellent chrome '60 grill, and will send the hood inserts out to have them chromed when I do the paint and bodywork on the truck. I have a mint set of '60 inserts (primed) if you want to put the "right" ones in your truck! -Brad
