Question for those who have used seam sealer
You guys that have used seam sealers, what type is the best as for as not cracking, shrinking, peeling, and ease to use? Also how good is the brush-on type? And how long has it been with no problems? I got a type from Autozone and it really SUCKS!!! It wasn't 2 days and it started cracking, peeling, and shrinking. It did not remain flexible like the tube said it was supposed to. So now I get to redo it again and I would like to use something that will last. Also did you guys use any type of rust preventitive under it?

We use 3M Fast and Firm but we put it on in layers, letting it set for a couple of days in between coats. This works ok but if you don't do it this way, the sealant will shrink. This means you cannot paint until all of the shrinking is done. We prime before using Fast and Firm but use the brushable on bare metal. 3M's brushable will shrink, also.
I am not sure what was originally used but it is good stuff! JIm Last edited by JimKshortstep4x4; 10-28-2003 at 08:30 PM. |

I used 3m automix 8308 heavy bodied seam sealer on my 71 p/u. Idid mine about 4 years ago and havent had a problem. You do need a special gun to apply this sealer. Any paint store that sells 3m products should have it.

I forgot to tell you to use masking tape on both sides of where you are sealing. then use your finger to smouth the sealer. then remove the tape and smooththe sealer again. I think you will be very happy with it. good luck.

smooth it out with laquer thinner, put a laytex glove on, you will wipe most of it off. after I smoothed it out I sprayed the thinner over the sealer and you would of swore I sanded it.

The local Chevrolet dealership, (parts dude), told me that GM does not have sealer in a tube. They do have strip sealer, which is very expensive, ($70 for a small box). He told me their body shop uses 3M sealers.

Do you guys use the same stuff for like around the windshield where the panels come together? Does it eventually harden and seal around there? Thanks, Jeff.

We tried the tip on using lacquer it it works for us. It will take the primer off which may or may not be a problem.
